Haha, a hair defensive? I've ran the halls of Youth Congress a time or two. To say the fashion show experiment is for the halls of a minority is FAAAAARRR from the truth.
Theologically, to me it doesn't matter a whole lot (I'd agree more with Prax's prior post). I'm pointing it out because it's quite ironic. The folks who stress out over clothing and outward appearances are in over the head in it.

Re: Shopping for General Conference
I agree with Sarah as there are those on both ends who will go different directions. Whenever I go to GC I dont go out and purchase new clothes. I wear nice clothes God has blessed me with already.
I actually think it is preachers wives in higher positions who do that because some of it unfortunately is political. Now Im not only pointing fingers at the wives here. I chose them because that attend more conferences and meetings than us (for lack of better woird) ordinary saints. For some reason they think it is wrong to be seen in the same outfit twice. Im not broadbrushing Im simply giving an opinion of what I think. Thats there pergogitive to do so if they so chose to spend there money that weay.
I decided a few yrs back to forget GC...Youth congress is where the action is. There meetings are much less impressing with the clothing, dont have all the political meetings, and I feelits more about the spiritual aspect of getting together. Plus, Im young at heart.
I dont know if any of you were at Louisville about possibly 1999 when they spent over an hr collecting $ for Bro Urshans retirement gift for a new home in which he was building already and Im sure he and his wife were very well off already. We decided to leave as we were there to have church. It wasnt the fact that they were taking up $ but they kept on and on and on and on with the collection. They were at something like $200,000.00 when we left. It wasnt a spiritua lexperience at all. Im sure alot of folks had spent alot of money just to get to the meetings after working hard days and spending there only vacation time during the yr to attend.

There is a lot of truth in the bolded statement, but there is also an element of "Preacher's Wives", who are not a part of the "Keep up with the Joneses culture" that don't do it. There are definitely status groups within the UPC and it involves preachers and non-preachers. My mother, for example, was a preacher's wife and I don't know if she ever went shopping for any conference. But I have friends who were a part of the "Upper Crust" (lack of a better term) that were not in minister's families who would shop all of September to get ready for Conference.
There is NO denying it....there is a "status symbol" group within pentecostal cultures, and certainly within the UPC. Those who are a part of that "Upper" group empty their pockets for conferences.

Re: Shopping for General Conference
Hey, I just saw on the schedule that my brother is speaking on Saturday at the youth service. Who knew? He hasn't even called me for any sermon ideas yet.
