Happy Halloween?
Is there any good reason for a Christian to celebrate it?
absolutley! the mission field beats a path to your door!

How much do you really know about this haunted holiday?...
more than many church folks

It has roots and overtones of Satanism and devil worship.
*cough*
not really... no.
It has roots in Autumn harvest festivals more than anything. Current growth...
now that has roots in commerce.

The Origin of Halloween
There is little doubt that the Roman Catholic church sought to eliminate or supplant the Druid festival of the dead by introducing the alternative observance of All Saint's Day on Nov. 1."
actually there is serious doubt as to it being a 'Druid festival of the dead' at all
Quote:

- Colliers Encyclopedia
Associated through its name with Allhallows Eve. Popular secular observance of Halloween, falling on the night of Oct. 31, is derived from the rights of the Druids celebrating the day of Samhain (pronounced sow-en), the so called "lord of death", when the "Lord of Death" called together the souls of the wicked who had died during the past year.
church mythos, for the most part as Samhain does not mean 'lord of the dead'
Quote:

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 "When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. {10} "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, {11} "or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. {12} "For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you.
Jeremiah 10:2 Thus says the LORD: "Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
But they did not obey.
nothing to do with modern halloween at all.
somewhat to do with Samhain but that is a different matter all together
and not tied to the 31st of October.
Quote:
2 Kings 17:17-18 And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger. {18} Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone.
Commands to Christ's Church
Ephesians 5:11-12 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. {12} For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.
1 Corinthians 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
2 Corinthians 6:16-18 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." {17} Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you." {18} "I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."
2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
again, nothing here dealing with halloween..
not a single verse about gearing folks up to pay the dentists' mortgages
three months down the line.

Re: Happy Halloween?

We've never allowed our kids to go door to door trick-or-treating or dress in scary costumes. (Non-scary/gory costumes and innocuous school parties are okay with me.) However, the church has had "Trunk of Treats" for the neighborhood and church kids ever since Jeffrey was small, so the kids have attended that for the last few years. In addition to dressing up and getting candy, they participate in handing out goodies to the neighbor kids.

A few weeks ago, Jeffrey and I were browsing Goodwill. He held up a plastic Jack-o-Lantern and said, "Look, Mommy! A Trunk or Treat bag!" I realized that "trick or treat" wasn't even in his vocabulary.

Re: Happy Halloween?

I'm thinkin of dressin' up as Lee Stoneking this year. That'll be scary. Well, I've got the hair for it. Or, the lack thereof.

Do you really hate halloween?
or do you hate the things you've been told that it is?

there is a serious difference.
Are there more workings of magik this time of year? Yes.
Are they confined to Oct 31? No.
Do they have anything to do with the commercialized holiday of halloween? Not really.

Admittedly there are some seriously nasty costumes and decorations out there
these days, as well as some fools that want to use the excuse to engage
in very poor judgement and behaviour, that has nothing to do with the
day itself either.
My son said it fairly well in his 'this is the day' thread.
It is a day that God has made, same as the other 364 days of the year.

The followers of Jesus can either get off of their soap boxes and
engage the folks that are coming to their door, or they can cower in the
back rooms of their houses and pretend that no one is coming by at all.

Tracts and prayer and even conversation with them and their parents if
they are with them and have the time.

Halloween and Easter are my two least favorite holidays for one reason: All that candy. We've placed serious limits on the amount our kids can collect and keep--otherwise, I couldn't keep my sanity!
