Yep...

Even cremations cost a lot more when you go through a funeral home.

We called all around New Orleans when my FIL died and we got prices between $800-$1200. We finally called the mortuary (where the cremation would be done anyway no matter what) and the charge was $400.

The rest of the service didn't cost us anything (Except for what we paid the soldiers who did the 21 gun salute etc) because he was in the military and we had a military funeral at a National Cemetery.

We used a family owned one. I looked on the internet for about how much a casket was and they were right on the price, so I didn't feel like they were taking advantage of us on the other prices.

We did a pre-need. It was so much easier than trying to get it done after he passed away. Ok, it was only about 14 hours before he passed away but it was still easier. He was 92 and we knew it was only going to be days before he passed away. Needless to say the funeral home was surprised when they got the call that night.

On the day of the viewing I had my husband take some pictures of his dad to the funeral home and when he got there what did he see??

His name on the sign out front! He thought that was funny! He went in and said something about the sign and she said that they would have his name on it as soon as possible. My husband said no there is a name on there already Mine! She ran out there right then and took his name off. When I got there later that night the owner just kept apologizing for the mistake he made. It made a sad time into something funny to remember.

How much should a bare bones funeral cost? Is it usually about the same price throughout the country or are some places more expensive than others?

Hey guys if you will contact NLYP he will sell you a pre-need for any casket you want, as nice of a funeral as you want for $500.00.......you just have to be willing to take it to one of his competitors and make them honor it............
