We loved deputation. We loved sharing our burden for China and for the Chinese people. There was great response and we were supported well.
We loved meeting so many new pastors and saints and having the opportunity to visit hundreds of churches all over the fellowship. We loved the fact that there were young people who were challenged and impressed enough to later make application themselves to become missionaries and AIMEers. We had several who worked with us while we were in HK. They were ALL - each on of them a great blessing to us.
Missions is where its at far as I'm concerned. It's the highest rung of the ministry ladder IMO.
Most of the missionaries who were our personal frends didn't consider deputation a burden for the most part, but an opportunity and a privilege.

Growing up in a Pastor's home I can truly say that one of the many benefits, were having different ministers in our home. And, especially missionaries. It was always a wonderful time. My Mom was a wonderful homemaker and we always had them stay in our home and they ate with us. I don't know if all of them enjoyed this but a lot of them expressed how much they appreciated being able to stay in our home. We enjoyed listening to them tell their experiences and of the wonderful works of God. Never did we hear them complain about their experience. But, we did notice how tired some of them were and what a taxing thing it was to travel with children to several different places a week. But just as you said, we could always feel their burden and the love for the people.
One time I remember taking a missionary family to the lake in our city and having hamburgers and a picnic. They have always made sure that they let my parents know whenever they see them how much they enjoyed it.
