Re: FEAR FACTOR: Pentecostal/Apostolic Style

MOW...

Your opening post on this thread was very insightful. Obviously you have indeed done a great deal of study of church history.

The new comes forth out of the old and dying as a remnant which God uses to advance his reveolatory truths, always reaching forth unto perfection until finally, the church among the last remnant is perfected in the image of Jesus ready to receive Him at his coming.

It is my earnest belief that if the early Apostolic church would not have given heed to Paul's "grievous wolves" who did not spare the flock, that church had a chance to advance on to the glory that God had in mind for His church. Alas, she fell accepting the TRINITY and many other heresies as well.

We have not arrived yet as much as well as we might think of ourselves. But, there will be a people that will go on as relay runners, remnant always ready to come out of the old and dying until the baton is handed off to the last generation of seekers that will cross the line of demarkation into perfection, the image and statute of Jesus Christ.

May we all run "our" leg of the race with dedication, vigor and passion all for the glory of God!!!!

That is why I constantly tell people, "Follow the Cloud, not the crowd!" Doing so, one will NEVER be led astray and may just find continual spiritual adventures!

I'll even take that one step further and state that if the early church had not left its Jewish roots, the trinity could not have found a foot hold in its theology. The "spores" of Plurality would never have grown in the pure monotheistic culture.

Re: FEAR FACTOR: Pentecostal/Apostolic Style

I'm adapting this quote from a book I am currently reading:

"Most churches build their standards/leadership rules to manage the small percentage of wrong people on their team, which in turn drives away the right people on the team, which then increases the percentage of wrong people on the team, which increases the need for more bureaucracy to compensate for the incompetence and lack of discipline, which then further drives the right people away, and so forth."

Re: FEAR FACTOR: Pentecostal/Apostolic Style

I confess that I haven't read all 120+ posts on this thread. I'm responding here to the main point in the original post and MOW's comments about following the move of God.

When Azusa street broke out there were many detractors, including Phineas Bresee, founder of the Nazarene Church, who called it 'strange fire'. The following is a quote from Melvin Dieter's essay "Weslyan-Holiness aspects of Pentecostal origins: As Mediated through the nineteenth century holiness revival" as published in a work by Vinson Synan.

Speaking of Pentecostal pioneer Frank Bartleman, Dieter writes, "His reactions to Azusa Street were quite the opposite of Bresee's. Stirred by the revivals in Wales in 1904, he feared that the spiritual awakening might pass the holiness movement by. The holiness people, he judged, were 'loaded down to the water's edge with a spirit of prejudice and pharisaism.' 'They are too proud of their standing, ' he said, and warned that God 'might humble them by working in other places.'

Hmmm.....sounds prophetic...or like a commentary of current conditions in some quarters.

Another interesting viewpoint from a different angle!!

No prophesy holds as much weight as the word of God and should never be treated as such.

Anyway... don't get me started.

I have had too many close friends go off the deep end because they treated a personal prophesy as a solid, fool proof, set in stone word.

A word is to encourage, comfort and exhort not make your life complicated.
I totally agree; have a relative that got messed up over a prophesy given in his church. The church left the UPC and for a while was a bit off base.

He has since returned to more solid teaching but it was difficult for those who knew him.
