I believe a lot of times too some of these kids (and could have been Coop) are so gifted that they are bored in school, so that tends to cause the discipline problems.

While I wouldn't say I am gifted I was bored at school and even though I skipped out a lot still ended up being class valedictorian!
My daughter Alanna while undergoing testing for autism (which she does not have) has been tested for Attention issues??
Her attention span isn't great, and we said to the Phsyciatrist that no way we are giving her drugs, and I was surprised her teacher supported me on it.
We are praying though.
You are the parent and you have to decide what's best for your child.
I want to inform you that the brain is an organ like the rest of the body. If it isn't working right and meds can help it, then it's your obligation to make sure she receives them. Just like if her heart wasn't working right, you wouldn't deny her meds that would help her live longer.
I understand the issue with the stigma attached to psych meds, but it's due to lack of understanding.
Again, I want to reiterate that you know your child. If you believe something else can be done other than meds, do it. Don't put her on meds just because someone tells you it's best.

You are exactly right - thanks for pointing this out.

Our phillosophy is Meds as a "last resort."
We along with the teacher, and Phsyciatrist are focusing on other ways to control her lack of attention which right now even though it's noticable is not keeping her from progressing.
