I could even tell a difference in her handwritting. However, she didn't like the "feeling" the meds gave her and after we discussed it, winged off of them and decided lesser grades were better than having that weird feeling taking the meds.

I do believe meds have been over prescribed through the years for sure.
My son has ADD also. He took Ritalin from first grade and a difference was seen immediately, but I took him off in third grade due to listening to people tell me about drug effects and such.

That was a mistake. He barely made it through fourth grade, so I put him back on it. In eighth grade, Ritalin didn't seem to be effective anymore, so I put him on Concerta, however, that didn't seem to regulate in his body well. There were days he looked and acted drugged and other days it didn't seem that he took it at all, so I took him off and put him back on Ritalin again.

My mom talked to him that summer and convinced him to get off of it. I am still pretty upset about that, but he's now a sophomore and doesn't want to take anything. I'd love to get him on Strattera because I think it would serve him better, but he said he doesn't want to take anything.

In the meantime, he struggles through school. He barely passes his classes even though he is a gifted student intellectually. I am helpless and just hope that things get better in the future.

I think Strattera is the better of the drugs, however Tarah couldn't take it - made her sick at her stomach.

I hate to hear that about your son, when someone really needs it they should be able to take it without people trying to convince them they don't need it. When you understand the "process" or lack of it that causes the problem, it's easy to understand.

I do think Ritalin was over prescribed at times - just given to overactive children without testing them for ADD. Some of those kids just needed a good swift kick in the rear. Because of this, it's given the kids that really do have a problem a harder time from taking the meds.

When I was 5 years old I was put on Ritalin with out testing, I got in to the bottle and took a bunch of pills and my mother did not make me take it any more.

When I was 7 years old we moved to Okinawa, Japan. Second grade I had a witch of a teacher. I started getting in fights with her.

Went back on something else again, no testing.

Took it for a while and mom stopped it, said I was just not active.

Moved to Yokohama, Japan. Started getting in trouble at school again...

This time I took many test....no ADHD or back then I was not hyperactive Nor did I have a learning dis-abilty..I had a high I.Q. . I was not given any meds.

But the stress of teachers knowing that I might have a problem followed me to every school..

When we moved back to the USA... I was in a special ed class {because of the records} ...even though I had a HIGH I.Q......

I ended up later dropping out of high school.

I have often wondered if Ritalin and the other drug created problems for me.

My daughter Alanna while undergoing testing for autism (which she does not have) has been tested for Attention issues??

Her attention span isn't great, and we said to the Phsyciatrist that no way we are giving her drugs, and I was surprised her teacher supported me on it.

We are praying though.

That isn't heard to often anymore!

I agree though!

My mom had good intentions, but she just didn't understand. I have three months worth of Ritalin that I should probably throw out cause it might be too old now. I don't know.

I agree that Ritalin is overprescribed. When it was suggested to me that he had a problem and meds could fix it, I wasn't too keen on the idea. My brother had a fit and said it was the school system trying to get better control of kids, but I am a smart parent and wouldn't let him take it if it wasn't going to make him better.

The first day he took it, he came home with a star on his handwriting paper. It was the first time he'd ever gotten one. That sold me right there. In second grade, he was on the honor roll. That's his only time achieving that, since I got stupid and listened to well meaning friends after that, and things weren't the same even when he got back on it. Compliance was a big problem that I always struggled with, and there was a time when the school had additional supply to give him in case he forgot to take it in the morning.

I wish there was something more I could do with him now. He's a great kid and I don't have any problem out of him other than the teenage mouth once in a while. He has goals and dreams and I hope he's able to achieve them.

One thing though...he doesn't know he has ADD. I've never told him. The reason for taking meds was to help him concentrate, but I wouldn't give him a label. He's one to make excuses, and that's the main reason why...there is no way I want him doing like some others do and make excuses for his behavior. I've always told him that he is responsible for his actions. He still hears that from my lips.....LOL!

HO Praying for you and your son.
If I may ask, what is his first name?

Some drugs aren't compatible with all people. It's quite possible the Ritalin did more harm than good. A friend of mine was on it when she was about 5 and she would spend most of the time in her bedroom, screaming to the top of her lungs. Her parents took her off it.
