I remember the young'uns being taught with flannel boards.
I remember the old services when we kept the windows open 'cause there was no air conditioning.
I remember revivals lasting for weeks and weeks.
I remember church services lasting til 11 or 12 midnight.
I remember campmeetings with dinner on the ground.
I remember people coming to church and shaking hands and the men hugging the men and the women hugging the women every service. It didn't take long to make the rounds. Weren't many of us.
I remember everyone excited about church and the feeling that we could hardly wait to get there and we were in no hurry to leave.
I remember the feeling of love in the congregation for the pastor and for each other.
I miss church the way it used to be.

I remember when women wore dresses to all church services and to funeral homes.
I remember when all women teachers wore dresses at school.
I remember when all the stores and gas stations didn't open on Sundays.

Re: I remember when...
I remember singing "Standing on the Promises". When we would get to the part of "I'm standing, staaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnndddddddddiiiiiinnnnnnnnnggg ggg" the pastor would raise his songbook almost over his head and we always laughed.
I remember Easter with a white straw hat, white gloves, patent leather shoes and purse.
I remember potluck dinners almost every Sunday. My mom would watch to see who brought what and then tell me what food I could eat.
I remember getting "promoted" from one Sunday school class to the next.
I remember my dad and Clyde Haney talking for HOURS about the Bible. And I remember the day they came to tell Dad that he had been killed. We cried for hours.
I remember Donnie Martin playing 30 versions of "Three Blind Mice." There was the blues version, the rock and roll version, the country version, etc.
I remember Keith Lane seemed like the tallest person in the world.
I remember Wendell Elms was the funniest person in the world.
I remember George Craft could sing the highest notes and it was clear as a bell.
I remember church camping trips.
I remember Singspiration.
I remember looking at oatmeal boxes under the hair of some of the women so they could get it really high. I hated setting behind them at Singspiration.
I remember setting in the balcony at the old church in Stockton. That was cool.

Coffee99
Was that the balcony in the church on Harding Way or the one on Cherokee Lane?
I remember George Craft graduating with me at Scottish Rite Temple. I remember Keith Layne spending the weekend with us in the College dorm when he was about 12 and not yet so tall. I remember a good friend of mine, who is now a UPC official, leaning over and whispering to me as Wendell Elms walked by, "There goes the meanest kid in Pentecost".
[ I knew that wasn't quite true because I roomed with the "meanest kid in Pentecost!"]
Coffee99 do you know who Sweet Pea is? Do I know who you are? These forum mysteries are entertaining.

Re: I remember when...
* One time, when I was about 15, I went into the town I was living in at the time, to pass out Gospel Tracts. In the middle of town was a BIG Luthern Church. I felt led to go to every door and place a tract on all the doors. I did, and, as I did, I began claiming that building as a Pentecostal Church. I walked all around the building praying that, one day, the Holy Ghost would fill that building.
Today, that building is not a Luthern Church. It is called the New Life Church, a Pentecostal/Charismatic church pastored by Norvel Hayes (if he is still the pastor). Back then, I didn't know the difference between Pentecostal/Apostolic/Charismatic. I don't think anyone had "gone Charismatic" yet. Had I known the difference, I would have claimed it as an Apostolic Pentecostal Church.
* Does anyone around Tennessee remember the Mull Singing Convention that came on the radio? Use to play the "Chuch Wagon Gang". J. Bazzell Mull was blind and I saw him on his live TV program (where they played videos of Southern Gospel Groups- the Rambos, the Goodmans, etc). Mayfield Milk was the sponsor and, J. Bazzell would hold up a 1/2 Gallon Carton of milk. Trouble was, he usually held the carton upside down until his wife, "Lady Mull" would pinch his leg under the table. He'd turn to her and say "What are ya pinchin' me for?" She'd whisper, "You've got the milk upside down!".
* Remember the towels or cloth that was put over womens legs when they would fall out in the "spirit"? I wonder if churches today still have (or still need) those cloths?
* I remember when the late Evangelist Larry Gilliam climbed a tent pole and preached for about 30 minutes clinging to the top of the pole. Why did he do it? I don't know, I guess it was just there.
* He was preaching on the radio in Bridgeport, Alabama once when, right in the middlie of his message, he lost his new "store bought" teeth. They flew out of his mouth and hit the window of the control room and bounced back. He caught them in mid-air and, dropping them in his pocket, never missed a beat.
* I remember going to revivals in N. Georgia and having to post "guards" at the door to keep people from bringing in rattle snakes. (Snake handlers were pretty common around Kingston, Ga at the time). In Canton, Ga, a Bro. Glass slipped one in in his inside coat pocket. When the Spirit began to move, he pulled it out and began handling it. At one point, he brought it over and put its head an inch or two from my nose.
* My first revival tour, I guess you would call it, took me to 9 states in 30 days. I left my first wife (who passed away in '88) and children at home, and ventured into tthe full-time evangelistic ministry. I didn't know it but my wife started fasting the day I left home and never ate til the day I came home. I was "proud" of what I had accomplished, until I realized that all that was done in those meetings, was because of HER sacrifice, and not because of anything I did. I'm still proud, but the credit goes to Rose, and not to me!
Later- I'll try to post about "Elvis Presley and the Blike Slice Condication"

One Accord
I remember hearing J. Bazzel Mull when I first moved to Tennessee from California. He had a raspy voice and could never have done what he did without Lady Mull. [as he called her.] I still drink Mayfield milk every day. It's the best! I remember when churches had a whole row of accordian players in their orchestra and all the ladies would play their accordians with a "hankie" draped over their knees. I remember and old "free" preacher who would take his false teeth out while he was preaching and place them on the pulpit. I remember watching the second hand on the clock in my Dad's church and practicing holding my breath. I got up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds! Long winded preachers made me do some crazy things when I was a kid.

Re: I remember when...
What wonderful posts! I am new to AFF and I am truly enjoying this thread. What memories! I, too, grew up in MI and I remember the Hillsdale youth camps. My parents let me drive our station wagon and take a whole load of girls from our church. I also remember Chuck & Laurie Colgrove. I was about 10 or 11 when he did some work for my father who was in construction. We went out to eat and I HAD to sit in the front between Chuck and Dad! What a thrill! lol. Does anyone remember Bro. Helmuth from Three Oaks, or Bro. W.D. Ruff from Buchanan? Youth Rallys were the all important date in the month! You just didn't miss those. Remember youth groups going to small home mission towns to hand out tracts and invite folks to church? THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
