I read somewhere that everything's negotiable. Even in chain stores where you'd think the marked price is what you pay, no question. Talk to a manager and offer something less, and you'd be surprised how often it works. Probably wouldn't want to overuse this technique, though!
No, I've never actually tried this. Wait, I take that back! In a furniture store, I was goofing around (I get in these funny moods sometimes, almost like that guy in Walmart) and we were about to buy a couple of recliners. I said "take three bucks off, and you got a deal!" He did it! I saved $6 by negotiating! ('Course, I wonder how much lower I could have gone if I wasn't just goofing around! )
I think this works better with large ticket items because the salesman may be getting a commission!

My philosophy is-never pay full retail, unless you have no other choice!
Buy things on sale or negotiate a price.
Yesterday, I decided to comparison shop for groceries. I have 3 grocery stores within 1 mile of my house that I frequent- Winn Dixie, Super Walmart, and a locally owned store. I made out my list, and visited all 3 stores, making notes on the prices of the items. I also had several coupons, and a sale paper from Winn Dixie. I purchased stuff from all 3 stores, but by far Walmart had the best prices and I made the majority of my purchases there. I also used the sale paper at Walmart and asked them to honor Winn Dixie's sale on certain items. Overall, I saved 26 dollars using coupons and store incentives and sales. I am going to do this for the next couple of weeks to track my expenditures and store prices. I am also going to compare the prices at Sams where I buy many of my staple items.

Cool. Be sure to share the results!

When we travel, we always stop at the visitor centers as we enter a state and pick up a coupon book. I check out the prices at the motels in the city we are planning to stay in. We also belong to the memberships that several motel/ hotels offer. We have gotten several free nights stay using the memberships and gotten really good prices using the coupon books.

I usually use priceline; name your own price. Once in a while I don't get a booking and then go to expedia. This summer we went to SD and I got a room for 4 nights for $59.00 a night. This included pool, hot tub and a good breakfast. I called the same hotel out of curiousity and they wanted $119.00 a night. The AmericInn across the way was starting at $99.00 a night.

I have used priceline in the past, but my husband does not like to plan a trip that closely. He likes to decide where we are going to stay as we travel. So I have to plan as we go.
