Re: Pentecostal Pioneers

continued from previous post:

Years later, I was honored as guest speaker at a ministerial gathering at old Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles, California. The Holy Spirit led me to speak from a text that day that I never had spoken from before or since: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30. It was not for me to question the reason why, for long.

One precious brother, looking like a patriarch, stood and remarked that he was the father or founder of “the present day revelation of Jesus Christ as the Everlasting Father.” Another stood and claimed credit for the present day revelation of “baptism in Jesus’ name.” The Holy Spirit through the text given us in the Spirit that day, soon cut the ground from beneath their feet. When it was truly made known, the fact was that Jesus Christ is “the author and finisher of our faith.” Heb. 12:2. Thereupon we made known the manner in which the Lord first revealed the truth of baptism in Jesus name to us in Indiana; how about the same time the Lord revealed the same truth to one of our missionaries in far off India; and again to another precious minister in Canada; thus demonstrating the fact that “in the mouth of two or three witnesses” the Lord makes known the truth. Matt. 18:16. Thus, no single individual or group of persons have a right to call themselves the author or finisher of the “faith once delivered unto the saints” for this honor belongs to the Lord Jesus alone, who is indeed the true “author and finisher of our faith.”

Today, (written in 1967) after having been a minister of the Apostolic Faith better than half a century, and having evangelized in all of the states of the Union, the greater part of Canada, and sections of Mexico, we, together with you, dear reader, praise God for millions of souls that have been born into the kingdom of God through old time Apostolic revivals which have swept across our continent, affecting the entire Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish world. Truly, it is time for the Lord’s people to return to “the faith once delivered to the saints.”

Sam, the artical you posted references Evangelist R. E. McAlister. I read where he got into a Holy Ghost confrontation with another minister over the doctrine of sanctification, progressive or definate. It became a major point of contention because one believed that people could be baptized in the HG and still not be perfect in holiness but that the HG would lead them into perfection. The other evangelist thought that people had to be completly sanctified to receive the HG--because the HG will not dwell in an unclean vessel.
As the story goes they challenged each other to let God judge who was correct by killing the wrong one within a year. And that one of the man was dead within one year.

Ever hear of anything about this? I got it from an artical from a very kind lady who was UPC.

The blood's initially applied at repentance providing "justificaiton". It's work continues on through the "regeneration" through the Spirit, "adoption" through the name, and our "sanctification" by our obedience.

I have actually met some baptists that believe this. It might not be a blanket thing maybe it was personal opinion of these people I have known that follow this. I was talking to Irvin one of my baptist buddies once about my brother being a backslider. I said he has the HG but does not attend church and so on. Irvin--a pentebaptist said he don't have the HG then cause the HG is a keeper and it will not let you go. He explained that in order to receive the HG one must fully sanctified. Thought it was funny coming from this guy cause he was divorced for running around on his ex and such AFTER he first received the HG. But he was a true believer in God and the power of the HG!

.

I think those of us who are honest would agree with the first premise, i.e. that we can be baptized in the Holy Spirit and not be perfect in holiness but that the Spirit can lead us to perfection. I'm perfect positionally and in the sight of God because He sees me through the blood, and He sees me in the righteousness of Christ. I am holy/sanctified positionally because I have been set apart by Him as one of His own and I am also holy because Jesus lives in me as the Holy Spirit and He is my sanctification. But, I'm still very human and imperfect and will not reach 100 percent perfection until I am raptured. That is my opinion and the way I understand holiness/perfection/sanctification.
