Re: Pelathais tries to start another thread
Brother David, aside from a Daniel's Fast and an admitted aversion to Zuchinni did anything else exciting or eventful happen today?

Not sure what the original poster intended, but is the Daniel Fast meant to eat less or eat more, or eat nothing?
Thanks

Thanks Mort .. uh.. "Bob." I guess you're in stealth mode - no real names. I'll have to wait a while before any more changes. Renda's pretty sore with me about the way the NFL playoffs worked out.

According to the book of Daniel, it's "pulse" and water. (Pulse meaning " something sown; vegetable.")

I think the New Year being equated with a fresh start might have something to do with it...but our church fasts were in March of last year, if I remember right.
Quote:
Many RCC customs developed following the patterns of the indigenous people. The Santiago Compostela pilgrimage (The Way of St. James) follows the same route through Spanish Galicia that an older Gaelic pilgrimage to Finis Terra ("Land's End") had blazed. Medieval and even modern pilgrims on the route carry a scallop shell or at least a scallop symbol just as the ancient Gaels were said to have done.
There are many Hispanic families in New Mexico and Colorado that set up a Seder table at Easter complete with an "Elijah's Cup" but until recently they had no idea why. It turns out that they are the descendants of Spanish Jews (Conversarios) who converted to RCC to avoid forced deportation back in 1492. Outwardly they all behaved as "good Catholics," but every Easter (Passover) their grandmas would tell them to set the table in what appeared to be a strange manner compared to the other RCC in their communities.
Are there practices that we are adopting that follow some ancient urge? I personally don't think it's a bad thing at all. It's just kind of fascinating to watch humans as they go about their journeys.
|
I'm not sure what motivates people, but it is interesting to see similar practices across religious and cultural boundaries. For me, if the Bible didn't recommend fasting, I don't think I would do it. I really don't like to go without things, especially breakfast!

Why yes, thanks for asking.
The new hearing aids are affixed to the sides of my head. They're a programmable sort that are intended to serve as both a filter and amplifier of sound. The results so far are mixed.
At first I hated it. Too much noise. Every door in this house squeaks and no one has ever told me. Also, did you know the keyboard makes a clicking sound when you hit a key?
There is a definite adjustment period. Some sounds are picked up way too much and others not enough. But that was expected and I have several follow ups scheduled to try and tweak the input programming.
Also, my teen agers appear to have been in the habit of talking behind my back. Of course, they could have shouted through megaphones behind my back and I wouldn't have known. Now I'm picking up on the fact that I have been the butt of a few jokes and pranks for some time. Oh well, kids!
There's a Bluetooth interface that allows me to use the hearing aids as a "hands free" cell phone. The same with MP3 players and any other device. I've got a "Streamer" that I can wear around my neck or carry in a pocket that plugs into just about anything that isn't otherwise Bluetooth compatible.
I watched much of the History Channel's WW2 in HD (only not in HD) last night. I was able to turn off the CC for much of it. But people with deeper voices were difficult to pick up. This may be something that a follow up and reprogramming tweak will fix.

Re: Pelathais tries to start another thread
Well I certainly need to cut back. I have a cowish nature that needs to go down to the size of a calf......when it's just born.
My problem is specialty chocolates. I went without them for a full year until I read in the Readers Digest that it was healthy for the heart. Well, I mean if it's good for the heart, eh, why not! DUH, wrong. I have to abstain and remain abstaining, THAT will be my Daniels Lent.
I sacrifice myself on the altar of cocoa beans and I am suing Willy Wonka!

What Missy B describes is the "Biblical" approach. You are free to eat and drink as much of the allowable items as you want, however you are restricted to those items. Given the lack of meat and most breads (no yeast) the average American adult would probably loose some weight on this diet.
The Daniel's Fast that I've seen promoted seems to be more in line with a health food craze. No "additives" are allowed either. Yet, most food additives come from "something grown." The largest additive producers: Monsanto, Archers Daniel Midlands, Conagra - are all huge agri-businesses.
I'm not arguing either for or against the use of food additives. They're essential to preservation many times. I was just wondering how widespread this custom has become. This is our second year with it. I have a family member who is a minister in a non-UPC Oneness church in another state and they are doing it. I have another family member in a UPC church on the East Coast and they do it as well.
