Re: GREAT MEN: Who Do You Admire?

Elder Paul Robinson had a love for lost souls that inspires me to this day.

Rev Rufus & Sis Pam Parker - These people loved on me. Pastor Parker was like a Dad to me. They taught me by example. They trusted me and I them. Sis Parker introduced me to Praise and Worship Music.

Bishop James Gilbert was so strong and so wise. For some reason, he took a strong liking to me and he trusted me. I love them both him and his wife, though Sis Gilbert and I had our share of run ins. Despite the mess, they loved and trusted wretched me.

Rev Michael Williams - I would be either on my way to hell or in hell if it was not for this man's preaching and influence in my life. I am not exaggerating. When I thought that I was hopelessly bound by the chains of an horrible addiction and sinful lifestyle, the Lord used him to preach deliverance to my soul. He loved me. He knew who I was by name. When I felt worthless, he made me feel important. His sermons were life changing, powerful. His sermons were always relevant.

Man, do I have some fond memories of my times w/ the UPCI!!!!

Re: GREAT MEN: Who Do You Admire?

Small question here, does it have to be MEN that we admire? What if there is a WOMAN we admire?
Reason I am asking is I have been going through this in my head and I have a few men I could add but I also have a few women I admire also. Woman preacher or not there are women that have a presence and spirit about them that even male preachers could learn from. (if they would get off their high horse)

disclaimer: That is not aimed at anyone in particular just a comment about A LOT of the preachers I have seen and met in my day, not all mind you. They tend to feel there is nothing they can learn from other men let alone women.

Can it just be men, or does it have to be ministers?

Of course AFTER I posted I saw that. =)

lets see......

Jonathan Alvear is up on my list, now I have not heard him in over 20 years but he always had a great spirit about him.
Can not forget his father Juan Alvear
Anyone who knows my brother Tom better NEVER tell him I put him on my list. Although he was my pastor when I was younger he isn't any longer. I think I learned to appreciate him more as a bother and adviser more in recent years than before.
Elder Robert Cavaness (deceased) He was an awesome man of God. Compassionate and caring and a few steps ahead of his generation.
Albert Edwards, great friend. He showed me the power of true friendship and gave me an understanding of sacrifice.
George Pantages, his ministry and understanding of forgiveness goes beyond anything I have ever seen.
Of course I have left my current pastor off because you wanted to know about those other than our pastor. He is an awesome man though. Go Bro Romo. =)

Connie James: my big sissy, one of my best friends, adviser, teacher, and all around good gal. Always going to tell it like it is even if it hurts her and you. She never does anything out of the emotions of the moment. She has taught me temperence and patience. Also to trust in God for ALL things even when you feel like the world is coming to an end.
I must say she learned a lot of it from our mother so can not leave off Ethel Jacks. Love that women.
Sis Alvear, Jonathan's wife, that women has strength beyond belief. To survive what she has experienced in life you would have to be strong. I would have begged for death I am sure.
Sis Janice Alvear, a lady of the highest caliber. If only I were as willing to follow God where ever he leads like she has been willing to do.

Josh and Asleigh Barsotti, A young missionary couple that is willing to go any where that God wants the to go to see the world evangelized. Right now they are in India and next year they are headed back to Norway. God bless and keep them. May a few of us old folk be as willing to do as God wants as they are.

This will have to do for now.

=)

Oh one last person. My wife, she has shown me love, forgiveness, understanding, compassion, long suffering, meekness, and the list could go on forever.
Love you Gina, with all my heart.

Re: GREAT MEN: Who Do You Admire?

In my younger days, I would say that I was influenced a lot by my dad (deceased), who was my Pastor.

I was greatly influenced by David Terrell, and most of the "healing evangelists" of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, as I either saw them, or read their books. I formed much of my beliefs in Gods ability and desire to heal by seeing him do so thereby confirming his word. My wife and I both received the Holy Ghost in a David Terrell tent meeting.

I took a turn in the early 90's after a youth Camp we took our kids to in Christenburg, VA that Bro Tom Peters was having. I met Pastor Jerry Cox of Franklinton, LA, and saw the Love of God permeating from him in a way that I had not seen before. Though he would likely not remember me, my contact with him changed my life. I can state that through the encounter with him, I found conservativism.

Pastor Tim Cormier also greatly influence my life. The man truly was what I would think of when I say the word Pastor. He was also a tremendous teacher. I think if I could pick any man as a Pastor today, it would be this man. When I broke away from him to "spread my wings" and attempt to fly, I did not do it right, and wish I could go back and redo it all. My heart weeps just thinking about it.

Bro RE Strange has been both a Father and a friend to me since we met on GNC many years back. I have learned Much from him, and love him dearly.

There are so many others that I could list. Elder's Alvear, McMullin, Bean, Ballestero (father and son).... The list goes on. I am a product of the men and women that God has placed around me over the course of my life. Some of the influences were for the good, some not. I have learned what TO DO, and what NOT TO DO. I have gained, and I have lost. I have learned to be abase, and abound. I am truly thankful for a God that would live me enough to take notice of this Jacob, and make me an Israel.
