That's not a insignificant observation. What about fertilized eggs that start dividing like normal but a few days later divide a "little too much", thus forming an identical twin? About the majority of fertilized eggs that never get implanted in the first place?
In light of this, there is a VERY significant time in a (living) eggs life and it happens around the four week mark when the heart starts pumping and the first brain waves are detectable, and each happens often within minutes or hours of each other. I believe THIS moment is much more poignant than the act of fertilization.

But according to frog, it's not human.

I don't have much of a problem with his definition.

I can't speak for him but to me this is truly the time when the fetus goes from being "alive" in the same way that any other cell in the body is living to a full blooded human being with heart and soul. The few weeks leading up to this moment are simply too volatile with both spontaneous miscarriages to splitting (identical twins). It is also not that many days after the woman starts suspecting she may be pregnant.

Re: Planned Parenthood Plans 40 Days of Prayer (L)
I just had a startling realization today. Conception itself is a process.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_fertilization
Quote:
Fusion
After the sperm enters the cytoplasm of the oocyte, the cortical reaction takes place, preventing other sperm from fertilizing the same egg. The oocyte now undergoes its second meiotic division producing the haploid ovum and releasing a polar body. The sperm nucleus then fuses with the ovum, enabling fusion of their genetic material.
[edit] Cell membranes
The cell membranes of the secondary oocyte and sperm fuse.
[edit] Transformations
In preparation for the fusion of their genetic material both the oocyte and the sperm undergo transformations as a reaction to the fusion of cell membranes.
The oocyte completes its second meiotic division. This results in a mature ovum. The nucleus of the oocyte is called a pronucleus in this process, to distinguish it from the nuclei that are the result of fertilization.
The sperm's tail and mitochondria degenerate with the formation of the male pronucleus. This is why all mitochondria in humans are of maternal origin.
[edit] Replication
The pronuclei migrate toward the center of the oocyte, rapidly replicating their DNA as they do so to prepare the embryo for its first mitotic division.[9]
[edit] Mitosis
The male and female pronuclei don't fuse, although their genetic material do. Instead, their membranes dissolve, leaving no barriers between the male and female chromosomes. During this dissolution, a mitotic spindle forms between them. The spindle captures the chromosomes before they disperse in the egg cytoplasm. Upon subsequently undergoing mitosis (which includes pulling of chromatids towards centrioles in anaphase) the cell gathers genetic material from the male and female together. Thus, the first mitosis of the union of sperm and oocyte is the actual fusion of their chromosomes.[9]
Each of the two daughter cells resulting from that mitosis has one replica of each chromatid that was replicated in the previous stage. Thus, they are genetically identical

At what point in the process of conception described above is that single cell a human being?

Ha, don't worry; those evil guys are needing meds to keep it up already;
not convinced it will solve most of those women's problems, tho...some, maybe.

Maybe I am not the Christian I thought I was.
I think I am done at AFF for a while. This place has suddenly lost it's joy. Now sounding more like the UC church I ran screaming from.
Peace out.

Randy, I've already made the point that life is in the blood in my past posts. By the time a woman even suspects she is pregnant, the baby has developed a heart and circulatory system.
