The Message interpretation is pretty sobering:

1 Timothy 2:9 (The Message)

8-10 Since prayer is at the bottom of all this, what I want mostly is for men to pray—not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God. And I want women to get in there with the men in humility before God, not primping before a mirror or chasing the latest fashions but doing something beautiful for God and becoming beautiful doing it.
Are you asserting, then, that primping before a mirror or wearing the latest fashions is sinful?

Is that the concept behind this verse?

Baron I think you know what I mean, my friend.

Would that apply to an every day attitude or just a church service and general meeting? I just don't see what is wrong with celebrating by being dressed up. We do it when we go out on a date? What's a better date than with God? Again, I know some people are into themselves. That's a given in a crowd, but I see sincere people at the core of it all, Renda. I walk among the crowds and we are praying with people. It's a little different than sitting in the back and scoping the place out. The ones in the back and not getting involved are the ones with the problem, IMO.

Had a funny time @ campmeeting one time during the reading of the rules. A minister while reading the rules stated the women weren't allowed to wear thongs ... then he paused ... and turned bright red. He meant sandals.

Should've just kept reading ... good laugh though.
You have to draw a line some ware.

No, only when that's more important than being humble before God or it becomes the focus.

We've all seen those people that are only there to be seen.

I would say anywhere - -not just church.

You can dress up and look fabulous - not against that and I don't believe God is either, but if THAT is what is most important to you when you go out, then that's where it's wrong. Once again, a matter of the heart.

The same thing with modesty. Don't harp continuously on modesty, where it applies to your pet issues (pants, sleeves), but not include the full meaning of the word - to draw unnecessary attention to yourself.

It's the double standard that gets me.
I agree it is NOT Consistent. We preach against sequins and sparkles on clothing it is as much a sin as makeup.

I agree. I used to put my lipliner in my bra, so I wouldn't leave home without it. LOL! So, I get that.

I'm just wondering if we are judging this group of people by a yearly meeting or a church service. Not sure I would put it down to say they live this way 24/7.

When I was growing up we always dressed up for church. We felt it was the right thing to do when attending church. I think I've always liked that. I want it to be a special time.

Absolutely! I know what you're saying. But wearing "showy" clothing really isn't the issue--it's the "showy" attitude. Wearing a beautiful dress with a humble spirit is not going to come across "showy"--just pretty and sweet.

When people think they are superior to others (or they act as if they are) because they're wearing nice clothing--that's when it's an issue.

See, your one post explained more clearly what my 10 were trying to say.

Also, please remember that I use to live in St. Louis so my outlook is a bit tainted at times.
