Dancing in a church setting is a normal expression of joy and excitement; it should never be called being "in the spirit", IMO, but it usually is. (And is equated with spirituality.) Dancing for joy in God's presence is a perfectly acceptable form of praise and expression, as long as it's done decently and in order; it is not a positive indicator of a person's spiritual status.
Ditto! Could you please start your own forum were we can only post little affirmation smooths? You are right on a disproportionate number of posts!

I am a firm believer in the Old Paths

I have never bought into the idea that people are in some kind of trance when they're dancing "in the spirit." I've seen people who wouldn't stop dancing even if the pastor needed to say something, or who (IMO) *pretended* they were unaware of anything around them. I know; I'm being cynical. Sue me.
I don't know, I've worked myself into an ecstatic frenzy on a couple of occasions
Nor is dancing required to be "Apostolic." People who have disdain for churches who worship differently just don't get it. You hear things like "You guys are dead" because they've put the Holy Spirit in a box of preference. I've sat through liturgical services with tears running down my face and I've danced with celebration joy having a wonderful time.
Butl... but... *gasp* But carnal dancers might TOUCH someone of the opposite gender!!!
That's what I was told, anyway. I wondered when was the last dance they went to... I went to most of my high school dances in the late 80s and there was very little physical contact. A group of us were also told that we couldn't have a first dance at our weddings. We asked why not, since we'd be married to the person we were dancing with, and we were told to avoid the appearance of evil. HUH? I guess the idea was that some people would think we'd danced elsewhere or practiced ahead of time, and that would make people think badly of us.
I think dancing is fun. I'm not very good at it, and I do think there are limits to what is appropriate, but those limits should be left to individual discretion and depend on the situation.

I didn't see any of that for a for a long time. Then I started going to a new church. For awhile, I didn't notice what other people were doing during worship. Then one night I did. People's eyes would roll back in their heads and they'd shake and buck uncontrollably. There were some who did other things for show, but the way their eyes rolled back was weird. I don't know if they were in a trance or not. They said they didn't know what was going on around them, but they generally stopped when the music did, so they must have been aware of some things. That's the kind of dance I picture when someone talks about people dancing in the spirit being in trances, though.
