I have a really hard time responding to posts like the one accusing people of being melodramatic for having PTSD from a church situation. It makes me feel belittled, dismissed, misunderstood and, again, falsely accused. It is actually a trigger.

I didn't accuse you or anyone else of anything, falsely or otherwise; I simply made a statement.

I'll concede to DG's point of there being rare occurrences where there is serious physical and emotional abuse.

Okay then. And PTSD does sometimes happen at those times.

Thanks for elaborating on this Mich. I often don't have the stomach to elaborate because then you often have to defend what you elaborated on. Some of us have been through so much and to have to constantly defend myself and others after having been abused adds so much insult to injury. Sometimes people go off because they just don't understand but often, they aren't listening real well either.

I actually take comfort in the fact that some people can't believe that spiritual abuse exists, because then I can believe than I can rejoice that it is not as rampant as my experience would suggest.

I was actually kind of careful, because I was real open about saying that I am living trigger free (that usually makes one rear up just to show you not to get to cocky), so I didn't attempt to use any examples of anything that had actually happened to me. Because it is a truly horrible thing to not only experience some kind of abuse, but then to have those experiences invalidated. (Abusers know how demeaning that is, and they use it to their advantage "If you tell, no one will believe you, and I'll say it was your fault").

Like the young girl that is abused by her father may have difficulty knowing what good, pure, enjoyable sexual intimacy is later in life. So we too may find it hard to separate the true and good in God and faith, from the toxic warped false religion we experienced.

That is actually a very good analogy for my current (and going on 25 years) distaste for classic "church".

I can experience the beautiful and true presence of God, but only when alone and only for brief periods before I get scared and retreat.

I tend to re-read the entire series every couple of years, and I swear it gets better with repeated readings. (especially some of the later books that don't get as much credit. Anne's House of Dreams would be my second favorite).

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! Of course I am a big fan of the Anne of Green Gables series, having read it many times, but I confess I never felt compelled to branch out into L.M. Montgomery's other works.

I stumbled across this book after finishing the last Betsy-Tacy book, and browsing one of fellow Good Readian's (Wendy Darling) bookshelves.

The Blue Castle is the story of 29-year-old ugly duckling Valancy Stirling, an outwardly meek and obedient spinster with a rich internal fantasy life. Upon receiving some disturbing news, she decides that for once she is going to actually live . She then proceeds to start saying and doing whatever her heart desires, much to the horror of her widowed Mother, and various Aunts, Uncles & Cousins.

I was enthralled from the first chapter and read into the night, needing to finish this in one sitting. All together, it was an unexpected Gem, one that I plan to reread many times in the years to come.

By the underlined parts above, I'm sure you can understand why I think you'd REALLY enjoy it!
