Are you trying to say something like: The Bible says not to eat things strangled and Timmy is serving "Pressed Duck" - then someone might say, "God told us not eat dinner at Timmy's house tonight..."?
Instead of "God told me so" being one of those "voices" in some one's head, it's really just someone's reading of the Bible.
Sort of, but not quite. I'm talking about purported messages from God, and the idea that one test for such is that they "line up" with the Bible. If it doesn't pass the test, then you're done. If it does, are we are stuck with accepting it? Or maybe there are tests?
(I probably could have used a better example. )

1) Was the "prophecy" or claim made "In the Name of the Lord?" ... and,
2) Did the predicted outcome "follow" or "come to pass?"
This probably doesn't give us guidance on every proclamation since many have no predictable outcomes; however since people who are prone to saying "God told me..." in a manipulative manner will often make many such statements, even one "miss" marks them as a "false prophet."
Knowing that they are being held to such a standard will give many people pause before they "take the name of the Lord in vain." Yet in my experience, there are those who keep running themselves into the same brick wall over and over again without ever learning from their own failings.
Very interesting thread...............I think at one time or another, we have all had those
moments. If you know what I mean.
We have all heard those voices in our head. Especially during one of those GOOD services!!
I have even heard in the past of a certain preacher telling his congregation that
pants on a woman were a Babaloyn Garment.
I often have wondered even with the oneness issue. Has God spoken to everyone
about the issue, or do we just agree?
Im just saying................................
I preached or taught at least once every Sunday for 15 years. There were very few weeks off. Throughout my ministry I never once made a claim that "God had told me specifically thus and so..." about anything. Of course, I had a reputation for being a "Bible teacher" rather than a "get-with-it-evangelist." Yet folks would just get up and dance at times. More often toward the end.
Any way... I'm not trying to say that I was some how "better" than anyone else. It's just that this particular thing terrified me. I preached the Word with confidence and boldly; but I never tried to pretend that I could "read other people's mail." I had a cohort at the time who delved into that a bit too liberally at times and was constantly creating trouble for himself.
For me, Deuteronomy 18:21-22, was practically a mantra. "... How shall we know...?" I tried to share that with my "cohort" a few times. He developed a bitter hatred for me.
The word says Satan transformeth himself into an angel of light. I believe there are many "revelations" that were not given by our lord and savior. I say examine the source and their walk with god. Even when I wasn't saved, I never understood the trinity or the emphasis some denominations placed on it. I always knew jesus, the father and the holy ghost were all one, just different names. Just like your mother is also a wife and sister. Doesn't mean she's three different people. Jesus said it plainly "the father and I are one".

How in the world does that illustration help? My mother is not her own wife or her own sister!

The source? Their dedication to God continually amazes me. I don't really care if some on this forum don't think that they are saved because they are Trinitarian, but they are constantly seeking God and in prayer, which is why I took their revelation seriously. In that same regard, there are many Apostolics I know who love and seek God just as much as the woman that I'm thinking of who have shared their revelations. I simply cannot say that just because I don't agree with someone's revelation or view of the Godhead that it was then something sent from Satan.
