What direction does he think the UPC is going in?

I'm just asking because I can't figure it out.

Some people shouldn't try to wear a beard then there are those who can. It is simpler for a pastor to set a rune that no one holds an office or take part on the platform if he or she has a beard rather than telling someone they can't take part because their beard isn't becoming.

Your pastor has a problem if he has to bad mouth another church on Sunday morning or any other morning. There are other things to preach about.

Pel I don't know what direction he thinks they are going in apparently he thinks there is a big enough diffrence to say something about them which I think is wrong anyway to talk down about another church

FTR: I agree with you on this.

My husband has a goatee and I LOVE IT. But he is not allowed to participate in any leadership roles (i.e. teach, choir, usher and so on) b/c of it. However at this time he is not interested in doing these things - for other reasons all together.
So a man is not allowed to participate in ministry for the cause of God's kingdom...because he has facial hair.

How shortsighted, and how sad.

It really depends. If you can't back up your "rules" with Scripture but you still want to insist that they are "of God" - then often times folks start to enforce those rules in ways that other folks call "cultish."

It's the atmosphere of control and suppression that folks call "cultish" more than the rules themselves; at least from my perception. Of course, if you don't have any scriptural support for your "rules," then what's the point in the rules? Unless someone enjoys an atmosphere of domination, fear and control.

BBM have you asked your pastor why he does this if your husband has a talent and wants to help what would be the pastors reasoning

Jesus had a beard.
God made beards for men to have (or not have, if they choose to).

The only way I can see a man's beard being "unbecoming" is if it is not properly groomed.

Obviously, anyone on the platform or in ministry should be properly groomed in terms of hair, nails, teeth, personal hygiene, etc. If a pastor wants to make a rule that all beards must be properly groomed, I can understand that. But to tell a man who's had a beard for 15-20 years that he needs to shave it if he wants to be a Sunday School teacher or bass player in the church... sorry, that just seems a bit much to me. It's unscriptural, and I view it as a "micromanaging" type of thing also.

I dont believe God has ever told any pastor anywhere that all his men must be clean shaven.
