Re: This Is Why We Get a Bad Rap!!

So, Pastor Sherri, I think DG's and Michlows posts help contribute to the Bad Rap theory, no?

Nothing is a sin, and standard keeping churches may not even live "in" Christ, sheeesh

LOL! All these years I just thought that people said and did carnal things because they were carnal - walking after the flesh and not the Spirit.

I'm finding out you can only act out, freak out, make mistakes, say bad words, have church trouble, people trouble, etc. IF you have been in a conservative church. I thought you were out of balance when you were carnal. Who knew? I'm so naive!

I completely agree.

So what exactly do you not agree with bro. I didn't mean to disrespect or paint a broad brush if that is what you have a problem with. We all know and hear the stories of the folks who leave and go off the deep end.

Re: This Is Why We Get a Bad Rap!!

You said, This is TYPICAL of those who are in works-based churches (churches who hold to standards)...then continued on to say that their relationship is all askew and possibly not "in" Christ....broad-brushing?? How about taking the whole paint can and dumping it on me?

And dude, their are folks who never stepped foot in a standard church, messing around with junk, cussing and such, what about them? I know PLENTY who come out of UPC churches who act normal and don't write naughty words down.

I respect your conviction in that area, and believe that you are wise to follow as God directs you.

I won't go so far as to say that God tells me to curse, I believe someone did that once on this forum to very adverse results

Scripture aside, I would like to address your concern for the necessity of a good Christian reputation. Though it is an admirable concern, nevertheless, you can't deny that it is somewhat unattainable. For me, I am not christian enough, well, for about a million reasons. And even for you there will always be some for whom you are not nearly "christian" enough (because you celebrate Christmas or wear a wedding ring for example). [/quote]

I agree with you in this area. Though I used curse words both before and after my conversion, my usage has nevertheless changed a great deal. Before I was converted, my only knowledge of Jesus was as a swear word. And it remains the only individual swear word that God has convicted me about.

However, though he has not convicted me about other words in particular, I am convicted about how words are used towards others, whether they are swear words or not.

Re: This Is Why We Get a Bad Rap!!

Now you know that it just isn't good juicey gossip unless theres a source to include while spreading it around.

Its innocent, although valid, discussion right now. Sheri is doing a good job keeping it that way!

So which is it? Do you want her to actually gossip about someone and give you the personal details? Or do you want to discuss the topic generically, without names, numbers and addresses, so as to NOT gossip, slander or backbite about anyone in particular?

It is perfectly acceptable, for example, to start a thread about stealing. "I know a person who shoplifts, who claims to be a Christian. What do you think about that?" THAT is not gossiping about someone behind their back. Gossiping would be saying, "Sis. __________ shoplifts when she goes to Target every week, and I think we need to talk about that."

1. Trusted members of this forum who have posted for a long time, and have shown integrity have the privilege of being taken at "face value."

2. Your attempt to call Sherri a backbiter is just uncalled for.

Furthermore, when someone posts something publicly, for all the world to read, it isn't private. It's no different than taking out an ad in the newspaper, posting your opinions for all the world to see--and discuss. Is it backbiting to talk about an article in a newspaper, and what the author meant by it?

As for Christians who cuss--some of you must have your heads in the sand.
I differ in my opinion here - at least a bit. Of course, Sherri is free to post whatever she feels comfortable posting. However, anyone who links to a publicly available blog can hardly be called a "gossip," so your defense of Sherri is really unneeded. Also, I haven't seen anyone call Sherri any of those things. Those were Sherri's concerns.

The blog is available publicly and the thoughts are already transmitted to an audience of "whomsoever will...". Presumably, a blogger is aware that at least one purpose of their blog is to air their thoughts. Further discussion of those thoughts might fall into a number of categories, but "gossip" and "tattle-tale" are hardly apt.

How about Sherri PM'ing the URL to me and I'll post it, if I'm comfortable doing so? Or how about some sleuths with time to burn uncovering the mystery for us? I have already found 190,000 candidates for the site Sherri mentioned. I'll let you know when I find an "ex-UPC preacher's wife" who talks like a sailor.
