I've seen some Italian dishes like that at Marshall's - - should have just bought them!!
I hate when I do that! I saw a beautiful, ornate silver service on sale at an antique store that was closing down. I didn't buy it because the sugar bowl lid was missing. Good grief! I could kick myself. The ones that I want are around $2,000. I should have bought it! I could have found a lid at Replacements, Etc. or somewhere. It wasn't silver plated. I'm still mad at myself about that.
I just realized that table cloth is my bedroom curtain material!
I could yank them off the windows and use them for my next dinner party!!
Awesome! But what if someone stained it? Sometimes you have to watch over people like little children. And, honestly, sometimes it takes the fun out of throwing parties and spending the money. "Please be careful and don't break that." "Could you please tell Little Johnny not to touch the glass?"

Well, little Johnny would have plastic at the kids table!
And, like Erma Bombeck always said - - if you aren't going to use it why have it!

Yes, and when you do use it, you want people to take care of things.
I agree!
This past weekend my niece fixed her TWO YEAR OLD her plate and sat her on my SIL's light blue cloth couch (brand new). My SIL hated to say anything, so I kept an eye on things. When she laid down her banana (peeled) on the couch, I just went over and picked it up and threw it away.
The next day, she made the baby a plate of corn and chicken salad with a half banana on the plate and headed to the couch. I said, why don't you sit her here on the bar - I don't think Aunt S would want anything to mess up her new couch.
She said, "oh", well, she never eats on the couch at home - she always sits at the table. And I said, so all the more reason she should just sit here at the bar. She can sit on her knees to eat.
What was she thinking?

I know! Isn't that amazing?!!!! I am always amazed by that!
When my children's friends would come over, they would be quick to say, "We don't put our feet on the couch." And they knew that children we not allowed to ever eat in the living room. One little girl came up to me and asked, "When I grow up, can I eat in your living room?" Too cute! LOL!
When I use tiered cake plates, I always use clear silicone to keep them from sliding. Some things you can do to protect a few items.
