Nope, it's really not a stupid discussion. The question was not do you believe in baptism, catholics believe in baptism, mormons believe in baptism, even hindus believe in baptism, but the question was...Is baptism part of the new birth?

Lol, I have to say that I'm surprised myself as well, considering how many people fight against the need to be baptised as a part of salvation.

Born of water is being born of the Spirit per the harmony of John's gospel. The Baptist preached baptism unto repentance. If one refuses baptism it is because God has not granted him repentance. Baptism is beautiful, it is scriptural. Circumcision of the heart and identifying with the burial and resurrection of Christ take place in/at water baptism. Whether it is the literal application of a spiritual reality, or if it is symbolism, I have not reached a verdict. A person with a clear conscience gladly submits to water baptism per the Apostle called Peter. That being said, I do not see where the scriptures teach that water baptism is synonymous with being born of water nor do I find where sin are forgiven at baptism.

Re: Is baptism part of the new birth?

I voted yes on this, because the wording of this poll is quite vague... is baptism part of the new birth... it doesn't ask which name to baptize in, or how baptism is done, or exactly how baptism determines "salvation" but just asks if it is part of the new birth.

So to that end, I would have to answer yes, of course. No one really can deny that baptism was part of the NT church practice.

Hebrews 6:1-2 "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."

Here baptism is mentioned in the plural... so apparently not just water baptism, but spiritual baptism was part of the doctrine of Christ!

The principles of the doctrine of Christ, according to the writer of Hebrews were the following:
1. Repentance from dead works
2. Faith toward God
3. Doctrine of baptisms
4. Laying on of hands
5. Resurrection of the dead
6. Eternal judgment

So the original polled question could be further defined by asking "which baptism"... water... or spirit? Or both?
