Is anyone holding down the 30-somethings? And aren't they free to start up new churches if the Lord wills? Should a 55 year old pastor resign and let his youth pastor take over, just so we can have some "new, young blood" running the church?

You know very well that there is political peer pressure among preachers to keep the young preachers towing the line. New ideas to reach the new generation are too often criticized as being "worldly". The end result is that the numbers of young preachers is diminishing.
I remember when we brought drums and guitars into the church. We were accused by other nearby pastors of turning our church into a bar! Thank God that my father didn't listen to the naysayers and just followed his heart.
Maybe it's just been my experience, but the older the pastor, the less passion and energy in the congregation. Often a church just gets "tired" under an older pastor.
I would rather sit under a 30 year old pastor with a great vision and passion for his generation than an old wise tired pastor. It may be a wild ride, but the payoff is tremendous.
In my opinion, Christ Church has gotten "tired" under Pastor Hardwick. They are in a maintainer mode, so they are voting on 58 year old Dan Scott to replace Bro. Hardwick. I would rather they bring in a thirty-something preacher with a lot of energy to shake things up a little! But hey, that's just me!
