I've performed tons of weddings. But I don't make them about ME. I emphasize the union between bride and groom and the commitment they are making. That union's validity does not depend on my proclamation. They are still married by signing the license along with the witnesses whether I say a thing or not at the end.

"The old life and the new life" appears to be a reference to how Christians should live their every day lives-- not just spiritual stuff.
