You're the one, in responding to what I originally posted, who's trying to take a part of what I said to make it into your own point.
Let me be clear on one thing: I'm not particularly a fan of either one of these two. But although Jakes doesn't preach Acts 2:38 as taught in most Apostolic/UPC churches etc, he does teach Holy Ghost baptism speaking with tongues, and he does teach baptize in Jesus name. He's A LOT closer to biblical truth than Billy Graham is.
It's interesting that you're spending all this time bashing Jakes, while elevating Billy Graham, as if Graham is supposed to be some anointed minister of the New Testament gospel. Feel free to do a little research on this.... Perhaps if you truly understood what Billy Graham has taught over the years, you might not think as hightly of him as you do.
|
You're "point" avoids my point. I wasn't arguing Graham preaches the truth. I was pointing out Graham preaches a soteriological message everytime he goes to the pulpit, that you disagree with that message is not the issue. That Jakes is closer doctrinally is also way way WAY off course of the point I was making and now...after 3 attempts, I can see you're just not even trying to get it.

Apples and Oranges. The bible predicted a Messiah. That was what they disputed. They had bible. Thus my point is reinforced. How do you know the will of God? Your guide is the bible.

Uh, no, sorry.
Those words were spoken by Gamaliel when the elders were trying to decide how to stop the apostles from preaching the gospel.

Right...they were preaching Jesus. They were preaching the Messiah.
Still, my point remains. There are still some things that are absolutes. This seems to be a problem with the modern church age, denying God's absolutes. "Well maybe it's the will of God"....maybe? Let's look at the word. Let the word of GOD be true and every man a liar.
Has the church changed? Has what it means to be a witness for Jesus changed or has being a Pastor changed?
Again I just don't see in scriptures Pastors getting fat and rich off the gospel. In fact Paul indicated they were quite poor for everyone elses sake. I don't see Paul wanting noteriety. This isn't about Jakes, it's about our day and age...the American church. There is no cult of persona in the bible. They preached Jesus. They did not preach pscho babble or feel good messages even sinners can live by.
Hasn't it occured to us that something is amiss today? We got gay churches growing more and more. We got what were once mainstream famous named minitries going UR and teaching gays are saved even when they are living in a homosexual relationship
We got big names becoming even BIGGER through TV and then crashing hard.

Amen. Well said, especially the part about how Jesus didn't get fat and rich off the gospel and cult persona. Good stuff Prax.

However, for decades, Billy Graham has been the face of American Christianity to many Americans. And the evangelical movement has benefited because of it. (And at this point, the sun is pretty much setting on the career and influence of Billy Graham.)
Yet, never has a preacher of Apostolic/Pentecostal background risen to the level of prominence Jakes is reaching. His prominence, assuming he doesnt go "off track" could be a good thing for the Pentecostal message; that's all I'm saying.
I know the show is not going to be a "preacher show"... (Jakes has a degree in Psychology, making it even more likely this will just be a general "advice" program) . But if God is in this, the increase in national exposure Jakes that will receive from this TV show could still be net positive for the furtherance of the gospel.

As for your idea about Jakes.
I've had the opportunity to speak with folks in the business world about Jakes.
Many of them have shared with me that they see him sort of like a cartoon character.
He becomes the bishop of every wantabe has been football player...
I have always had the thought that one morning we will all wake up and Jakes will have blown him ministry, his reputation and done the church in again....
I do not wish this on him.
If I were him.
I would have a helper follow me around and wipe that sweat off my head.
I can't watch him on TV...
