I don't think that college needs to be free.

This idea that we shouldn't have to pay taxes puzzles me...where do we think the money to run the country is going to come from, exactly? The point is, to use it wisely and minimize waste. I fail to see how educating the majority of the population is wasting money.

I don wonder if it would kill competitiveness from colleges. I wonder if it would devalue the degree because some would still pay for there kids to go a better college to have the edge.

Good point. Kids should work for to pay for something in the deal. Folks value things more if the worked for it. Like welfare/medicaid, many don't value it because no work involved.

We're all forgetting here that just getting a degree is plenty of work.
Sure, there are some that would slack - but they do that now.
I sure would have liked to have not had to work 40 hours a week while going to school full time. I would have gotten a lot more out of my degree than just doing the minimum...both in my job and in my degree...just to get by.

I have a BA in Spanish and English and a Master's degree in English Literature.
Of course we all know people who worked - it's the only way to do it, practically. I would have gotten a LOT more out of my degrees if I hadn't had to work for high tuition.
And yes, education is not "free" - somewhere down the line you pay for it.

I wonder how many would slack less if they were paying their own way through college.
Instead the taxpayers are paying that persons slacking way through college. What about room and board costs too, should that be free?

I don't know for sure if it were due to age or money, but from what I saw when I was working and going to college, the ones taking the day classes weren't nearly as serious as the ones taking night classes. I am pretty sure it was due to money though.
