We had television all those years too. it wasnt a big deal. Still isnt.
And I have long said, that this attempt to avoid everything like the plague creates immature Christians anyway.
You teach people right and wrong. You teach people to listen to the voice of God in their own lives and you make sure they understand doctrinally that Santification isnt about not having a television but it is about what you feed your mind. (as one example).
mature christians that have TVs dont watch things that are bad for their minds and their spirits. immature christians never grasp that. they wont watch Food network but they will read a smutty romance novel and feel they are holy. its crazy.
I wont even get started on sports etc.....
I will say I am happy to see so many christians on AFF staking out the position that singing at the Super Bowl might be a good thing but singing with Madonna would certainly NOT be such a good thing.

Ferd, you were a blessed child and young man!!!! I was raised UPCI also, and had the good fortune to have parents who allowed us to participate in some of the activities you mentioned (as well as some other activities). But I know MANY who were not given that privilege, it was "of the world", "sin" and "against our religion" - and alot of those people are not living for God now. My parents taught me to NEVER say something was "against my religion" - I was taught that I needed to have a conviction or a preference to do or not do those things. As I got older, I was allowed to work on my own to determine certain things (class rings, trimming the dead ends of my hair, etc) There is a balance to be taught - sounds like your parents had that balance!!!
How can we be salt and light to the world and win them to Jesus, if we totally isolate ourselves? I will say, there is a certain standard that I hold for myself, and there are certain things I prefer, but I have learned to not major in the minors.

Re: IBC Declined To Sing With Madonna/Super Bowl
"It's against my religion." I heard a friend say that same phrase one time at his bachelor party in a restaurant, to the waitress. She offered him something to drink (alcohol). He said "no" the first time. When she asked if he was sure, he said "No, it's against my religion." The waitress then asked what religion, and he responded that he was pentecostal.
And we wonder why some circles of Christianity are so prone to being laughed at, being made fun of, ridiculed, etc.
Had that been me, I would have simply left it at "No, I'll just leave it on the shelf where it belongs."
If I recall someone's quote on the IBC response, it doesn't sound like they (IBC) used the "it's against our religion" as their excuse to not singing with Madonna...

Re: IBC Declined To Sing With Madonna/Super Bowl
To be honest with you all I do not care who sings with who. iIf they needed a few dogs to sing and that would be ok with me. That would be a real kool halftime show, wolves howling.

Re: IBC Declined To Sing With Madonna/Super Bowl
Dagwood - I wasn't implying that IBC used "against my religion" as their reason for declining the invitation. I just threw that out there, because that used to be the standard response from so many young people to all the questions:
Why do you always wear dresses?
Why don't you have a television?
Why don't you go to Friday night football games?
Why don't you cut your hair?
and on and on and on.....
No matter what standard you choose for yourself, it should NEVER be because "it's against my religion." It should always be because GOD gave you a conviction - or you prefer to do or not do certain things. In the past, there have been things that I had no personal conviction against, but I chose not to do that, out of respect for my pastor.

Ain't that the truth! Most of the time, they aren't worth watching, IMO.

Actually, a bunch of dogs catching frisbees would be a great choice too! (Actually saw this during one NFL halftime show this year). I know our boys would love it.

I agree with IBC, and the decision they made, "...for what fellowship has light with darkness....? And madonna is definitely the darkness...!

Re: IBC Declined To Sing With Madonna/Super Bowl
I am so glad IBC did NOT appear with this woman at the superbowl.
Did anyone see the halftime show? I have not, but I've heard that it was almost if not, satanic in nature? They said the choir that appeared had a man dressed in black with a hood? Creepy.
