My grandmother is up in her 80s, and still puts in a huge garden every year, and still cans herself. She never stops for long, and is still going strong.
You'll probably outlive all of us here on AFF!!! Eating all that healthy homegrown food, and getting plenty of vitamin D and exercise....

There are few pests which is a huge bonus.
Here is a good site about growing in your area:

Can't really look w/my current internet, but surely this site will outline "Hugel" beds (sure looks like lasagna). We're building one now, maybe "Hugelculture" is the right term--I guess it takes a year or so for the bed to become self-sustaining, no water needed. Even in the desert, I guess.

Re: How to Save Money
Looks like spam.
I did a ton of online surveys one time and got $50.00. Unfortunately I probably got paid .50 an hour.

Re: How to Save Money
Tonight, this is what I made for supper:
A few days ago, I found a chicken that was marked down to 76 cents a pound. I cooked it in a crock pot, outside, so it wouldn't heat up the house. We ate on the chicken for a couple of days including sandwiches for lunch. Today, I took the chicken off the bones (what was left) and made a chicken gravy. Then, I made mashed potatoes (from a box! Ugh! Rare, but I didn't want to go through the work of making fresh).
Then, we had garden tomatoes, garden corn, canned spinach and canned baked beans.
I boiled the carcass and poured the liquid in ice cube trays to use later for chicken broth.
Waste not, want not!

Re: How to Save Money
Last night, I made a clam chowder and used about 1/2 the ice cubes I made from the chicken broth.
