I think you are describing an experience and scenario where the church and pastor have had little if any involvement in the larger UPC fellowship. Perhaps they have fellowshipped with other UPC churches that had pastors of a similar miindset, but they really haven't been involved in the "bigger picture."
UPC churches that I have been involved with have had things like Bible Quizzing and participated whole heartedly in the District events like camps and conferences. In these activities "the saints" often travel together and visit and fellowship with other UPC folks from across the country. Instead of matching up with people of similar standards, sometimes the fellowship is determined literally by the drawing of a quiz team's name from a hat. This makes for many new and chance encounters.
When you have families from your church traveling to GC or a conference somewhere without the pastor there to reign them in, the picture does indeed get bigger.

Wouldn't that come up in the annual business meeting?
It seems to me the affairs of the local church should be open affairs to the local church and not just one man and his family

im sure like if they raised the rates for some reason like he should wait 7,8,9or even 11 months untill the annual business meeting comes around. but that is besides the point, the point is why should it be up to the church if he should keep his upc card if he pays for it and they are allowing things that we teach agaist at our church.

Why shouldn't it be up to the church...at least to be a part of the UPC or any other group? Why should that decision be in the hands of one individual?
You know...I know of some UPC Pastors that have taught against video for years...even though for years the UPC allows video...yet they did not leave. Same with other thing...I never understood why when it comes to things like that we have to all divide. It's not like they voted to get rid of Acts 2:38 or allow homosexuals to preach....

Running Skaird!!!
With this issue of disaffiliation begs the question, what are they afraid of? Come on, all parties can turn this to their advantage if they want to. To simply cry, "We'll disaffiliate" is doing nothing but running scared! What will they to if they leave, join another group, independent or not, and an issue like this comes up there? Run again? WOW, now that's a good pastor, he runs from controversy!!!

no. if my pastor decided to go then i think of him as a man with a backbone thats not scared to stand for what he belives. him and his family have been in the upc for 30+ years and they have kept the same stand that they had back then why change it now.

Are they against all video use, even to the point of saying it is wrong to own a VCR or a DVD player or any sort of Video player?

that is a slippery slope........then you will have a church split over what color the new carpet should have been......church should not be treated like a democracy.....however it should not be treated like a dictatorship either....i guess you have to have a balance
