Very Serious

I have been approached by a gov. agency that works with the very poor....nothing political...they have asked me to hold a rather high position.
I would like for you folks to help me pray for the perfet will of God.

It is not a paid position but would include helping not only the poor in our church but the poor in many churches. They would like for our church to host their headquarters.

I can explain more later but not right now I am very busy...however a group of them met with me today. Also Brother Alvear would be on the board but only for for counsel. So it would not take up his time.

Love you folks.

Re: Very Serious

Will be praying for a confirmation from the Lord this. I certainly wouldn't want the government to get your work entangled in something you don't see in the future.

Yes, I'll be praying. However, something to consider: should you take this position, will the Glory for the work you are presently doing, continue to go to the Lord, or will the agency recieve the credit? How much "control" will this agency exise over you and your efforts? Looking forward to learning more.

Re: Very Serious

seems to me if it involves helping the poor then it's a question of not if it IS the will of God but whether it's NOT the will of God. in my mind that kind of narrows the focus of the prayer and considertion because God is always on the side of the poor.

Re: Very Serious

I'll be praying for you Sis.

I work for the city government and we have many Christian city employees and many churches on board some important social initiatives. The church I previously attended worked with the government to mentor kids from broken homes, a kind of government subsidized big brother fatherhood initiative to give kids a healthy male role model. The government required regular reporting on time spent with the kids and stuff like that but many really enjoyed blessing kids from troubled low income homes and it changed the world some these kids live in.

I’d say that as long as the strings attached to working with the government it doesn’t hinder the vision of your church it might open doors to do greater good for the community. Some churches are philosophically opposed to working with the government, especially tax funded programs that help the poor. This was a major issue in some churches when they begin working with the government along these lines. A preacher might preach against welfare, government programs, taxes being used to help those in need, etc. Then if that pastor aligns the church with the government under the umbrella of a government program it can breed confusion in the pews. If the church benefits at all from being involved in the program it will look like the pastor compromised his conservative principles for gain.

So I’d ask,

What is God telling me to do?
Will this hinder the vision of our church?
Will this potentially cause confusion in the congregation by appearing to compromise conservative principles?

I’ll say a prayer for you right after I post this. God bless.

Re: Very Serious

God has opened doors similar to this at our church. My wife along with other members of our church have found favor with governnemt officials and business owners. With all the free television advertising we want, doors are bursting open. I'm honored to be praying for you in this situation. It sounds exciting.

Re: Very Serious

Sis Alvear,
This reminds me when Bro N Urshan was the pastor of Calvary Tab in Indpls. He became very well respected and liked in the Indy because he volunteered for everything,he was on several boards and councils and he made a difference in Indpls.I believe this could be a good thing for you and the town where you live.If i were an gov official I would look for people of your integrity.JMO
