Self-diagnosis= phlebitis; anyone have experience?
I have an inflamed varicose vein on the back of my right leg. I've done the internet research as well as consulting a Nutritional Healing book I have.
It is painful and slightly warm. The reading indicates it lasts about two weeks.
Does anyone have more information?
Thanks

I plan to, but nothing is open on weekends or holidays.

Is there any swelling?
The other thing that could produce similar symptoms is a clot in the vein.
For phlebitis I think warm packs and an antibiotic is what is usually prescribed. And tylenol for the pain. I mostly see phlebitis secondary to IV lines.

Stay OFF the affected extremity. DO NOT under any circumstances massage the leg (might break loose a clot...you DON't want that). GO TO THE DOCTOR at the earliest convenience. Surely there is a clinic in your area that has a Care Center that is open on holidays. If so, get there. If not, off your feet until you CAN see the doctor!

Beth is right. I had phlebitis several years ago and I was hospitalized. The doctor ordered me put on blood thinners and I was not allowed out of bed until the problem was resolved.

Re: Self-diagnosis= phlebitis; anyone have experie
Thanks to anyone that prayed.
First let me say, this was a self diagnosis.
I went to work Mon ( a holiday for some of you) and tried to be careful not to hit my leg. Again, went to work Tues, and called the clinic to get an appt. They didn't have any openings until Wed morn. I explained the situation to the gal on the phone and she connected me to the nurses station. I once again expressed my concerns and she said I should be fine to see them Wed.
I went to work today (8-11) and left for the appt.
I have a large red swollen sensitive area on back of leg....it is an infection of some sort; possibly an insect bite. So while there is pain and lots of redness,it's not real exciting! (The pain was first noticed Sat afternoon and the redness was on a vein, and it did spread.)
(btw, I had not been to the Dr for 6 yrs ) So since I can't take penicillin or some of the alternatives I am taking Levaquin ; rather costly!!!

Levaquin is expensive, but very effective. I have used it to treat cellulitis, and it works!

Finished the prescription. Minimal improvement, so I have another one to take for another 7 days.
