Nightline question: Does satan exist?

Did anyone watch Nightline Thursday night?!

There was a dabate between a young pastor and a former woman of the evening who is now a Christian, for the side of, yes he does exist, and Deepak Chopra and Bishop Carlton Pearson, taking the negative view.

They only broadcast the debate in part, but can be viewed in it's entirety at http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/

I was disturbed by the comments of CP...I knew he was tripping in his views, but never knew to what extent.

See what y'all think...

Ezekiel 28:12 (KJV)

“Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.”
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.”

This is not an earthly king, as the word "cherub" is only used in references to angels.

15 "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee."

16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

The word "covering" is from the Hebrew word cakak, and means: to entwine, to fence in, cover over, protect, defend, hedge in, (source "The complete word study Old Testament")

Was Lucifer’s job to protect the very earth he corrupted? Was this one of his duties that gave him so much pride?

17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

0 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire

The devil is more Deepak chopra like than the ugley murder profile we see.

Re: Nightline question: Does satan exist?

Barb,

I had meant to tape that program after catching part of a promo for it. In the promo commercial for it I saw they had a brief clip of Carlton Pearson saying something that sounded like he was trying to minimize the reality of Satan. I remember thinking I hoped they had edited his comment and it was taken out of context. Sounds like they didn't!

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Unfortunately "Bishop" CP has fallen off the deep end in the last few years. The last interview I read, he stated his disbelief of heaven or hell, that we all were good and are saved.

Very sad...

Actually it was an earthly king, "the king of Tyrus". However, he was possessed of Satan. One could say that the king of Tyrus was one of many Old Testament "antichrists", and perhaps a type of the Antichrist himself.

I think we get stuck in very simplistic "either or" thinking when two different realities could exist at the same time. So yes, I believe that Ezekiel was addressing a human king. However, at the same time, Ezekiel was also addressing the spirit behind the mask, Satan himself.

The cherub referred to here was Lucifer. The King of Tyre was never in the garden of Eden.
We can speak to the devil that resides in a man.

Yup. He is heavy into "universal reconcilliation". Many of his Charismatic fellow pastors / preachers tried to correct him but he was hell bent (literally) on following this path.

I visited his church and annual conference way back around 1990 and it was awesome. Now that church is nothing and he is preaching out of a borrowed pulpit at some borrowed old mainline denominational church.

I always thought so highly of him because he was a great black leader who did not adhere to the victim mentality. He was a very positive force for many years in the Black community.

I approached him once at an NRB convention to ask about a friend of mine on his staff and almost got decked by his security! LOL!!! He waved them off and and had a nice short conversation.

Carlton Pearson is over the edge. he is solidly in the "no devil, no hell, everybody is going to heaven" camp.
