Preacher believes in Wine but NO MEDICINE??
This is taking from another conversation - the source I will never name. This topic strikes a nerve with me. I had a Uncle who was a preacher and died at age 34 BECAUSE he was taught it was a sin to take medicine.
Please share your thoughts on on this thanks
QUOTE:
I believe in taking wine for stomach problems just as the word says; wine is a natural occuring substance without ANY additions or chemical additives. grapes have a natural yeast on the skin and when mashed (without washing), the juices and natural yeast mix. "Kosher" wine is made this way; the "passover" wine was made this way. Nyquil is not anything "natural" and is called medicine, i.e. witchcraft according to the bible. I wish some of the Senior ministers who remember what was preached back in the 30's and 40's would comment on this controversial issue. Did you know that the average cost per person of healthcare in the US from 1900-1940 was $5 a year? Now, it is $1000's. GOD said my people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge. I am just trying to teach on a subject that is very simple, but not popular. GOD never said, take medicine...he gave us JAMES 5:14&15, that is GOD's prescription. If we aren't healed after that, then we have to confess we are weak in faith or there is unconfessed sin, amen? JESUS asked a question one time, he asked, "nevertheless when the son of man returns shall he find faith in the earth? I am just trying to point out something that needs to be addressed, discussed and prayed over. GOD said, "cursed be the man that put his trust in man". Isn't going to doctors and taking medicine trusting in man? What did they do in JESUS day, pray or die? Why are we so afraid of death? I believe we should pray and obey the WORD and fast and seek GOD and after that, GOD's will be done...It is the only answer in the BIBLE that I see...

Re: Conservative believes in Wine but NO MEDICINE?
Howard Goss, in his younger years, used to preach "against medicine" and such. Then after many years of struggling with an ailment he was told he had to surgery. BEFORE going in for the surgery, he went back to Louisiana where he had preached as a young man and repented from the pulpit for the things he had said in the years prior.
He then returned to St. Louis, had the surgery and the Lord raised him up.

Re: Conservative believes in Wine but NO MEDICINE?
Let me get this straight. The person is saying we are not to partake of anything unnatural? Has he read the ingredient labels on any of his basic foods lately? If he is going by what is and isn't natural, then he wouldn't be able to breathe anymore.
But excluding "normal" air pollution, lets think. What would he NOT be able to eat?
Cereal, bologna and other lunch meats, frozen dinners, most ice cream, soy products, several varieties of cheese, anything with saccharine or succrose or "high fructose corn syrup"... need I go on?
YET, if he were only to take natural products, he could still use herbals, of which most medicines are derived, as medicines.
I dunno, seems a bit weird to me.

Guess surgery wouldn't be ruled out by the man in the first post as long as they didn't give him anesthesia.

Re: Preacher believes in Wine but NO MEDICINE??
I know some who go to the doctor and some who do not. I am not going to judge it.
Each have to appear before Jesus. I just want to prosper and be in health as my soul prospers.

A lot of preachers preached against Doctors & medicine UNTIl they got sick.
The sad part is, a lot of their members died believeing God but when the preacher got sick, he caved in and sought medical attention. There's a lot of bitter people today over this.

Exactly what was considered pharmaceutical in the OT and NT? grinding up a willow branch to cure headache? eating mint to settle a stomach? Bible times didn't have science as we now know it. Much of what they used was mixtures of dried herbs and oils of herbs that they had collected.
Though I guess that if you want to argue that it would be pills or scientifically altered things that only come from what we consider a "pharmacy" today, marijuana should be an alternative herbal remedy-all natural and not sold in pharmacies, you know.
