Re: Elder mangun promoted!
I first heard G. A. Mangun at Louisiana Sr. Youth Camp, 1972 as a 14 year old. He taught one of the classes. I was impressed with his intensity and dynamism from the first.
24 years ago, for better or worse, Alexandria became my adopted home town. Both my children were born here. G. A. Mangun was my neighboring pastor and my presbyter.
Even though my life has gone through quite a different stage religiously, I always marveled at G. A. Mangun's mental and physical fitness, especially as he got up further into his golden years of life.
Speaking now simply as a citizen of Alexandria--it is extremely hard for me to imagine Alexandria and central Louisiana without G. A. Mangun. He was such a powerful presence. I know firsthand how he had the highest respect of the central Louisiana legal community, the medical community, the automotive retail community ... really, the entire business community.
G. A. Mangun, more than anyone else, brought "ole time pentecost" off the back streets and amply demonstrated that the local pentecostal pastor can stand for his convictions and still be a powerful and respected member of the community.
G. A. Mangun was a man of conviction, but I appreciate the fact he recognized, and rejected, hardline religious radicalism. I wish the modern-day UPC would follow his example.
I'll leave with my own little story that I still chuckle over: I became acquainted with Johnny and Norma Russell when I preached for him in Billings, Montana, when he was District Superintendent of the Rocky Mountain District. He loved to tell stories about when he was songleader in Alexadria and drove the bread truck.
He related about one Wednesday night service when Murrell Ewing (my pastor in my youth) was opening service and reading prayer requests. He was trying to read a prayer request Brother Mangun had written and was having a hard time. Johnny said: "Brother Mangun just scribbled and Brother Murrell strained his eyes and announced: 'We need to pray for a Mister Murrell ... Casey."
Johnny then said: "Brother Mangun almost jumped up from his seat on the platform and said: "measle cases!, measle cases!"
Johnny added, laughing: "Brother Mangun wanted service going 90 to Nothing anyway, so he'd try to speed up Murrell's slow drawl."
I am saddened because another part of my youth is gone.
While I may not agree with every single tenet and conviction of his, central Louisiana is a far better place because of the gigantic footprints of Gerald Archie Mangun.
My heartfelt thoughts go out to the family.

Re: Elder mangun promoted!
Ill never forget last night...
I posted this on the other forum..
I'm on my way home. I will forever treasure my time
with him and the family. Bishop is weak in body...solid in Spirit.
I took his hand and told him things from my heart to his. I will remember until the day I day I die the day this great man held my hand and with a weak voice that has proclaimed this Gospel so faithfully...simply said with a grin...I love you. I assured him the church is strong...I assured him that we won't waiver....I assured him the truth will march forward. I've cried a bucket of sweet tears...God bless this great man.
Then just 4 hours later at 3:19 am I posted this...
Just got a text from the family....
Time of promotion 3:08 AM
I have fought the good fight I have kept the faith...henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness....
What a man...what a legacy
it's a sad day

I posted this Indian proverb on my Facebook page, and I think it applies to Elder Mangun:
"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries, and you rejoice"

Re: Elder mangun promoted!
We are losing so many of our dear elders of the faith. They knew how to pray and get answers. What a legacy they leave behind.
I felt a strong spirit move over me Sunday while in church to pray for Bro. Anthony. As an only child I know this is a very, very difficult time for him. It is hard anytime to lose the ones you love, but being able to share your grief with a sibling helps carry the load. Thankfully, he has a strong wife and two children to help him carry the load, as he has to be there now for him sweet mother.
What a precious family. They have given so much to the kingdom. What a reward he will have. To be called faithful is a treasured thing.

Re: Elder mangun promoted!
It’s with a heavy heart that I inform you that our Honorary Foreign Missions Board Member, Bishop G. A. Mangun, was called home early this morning. Brother Mangun was a faithful and dedicated leader and minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and will be sorely missed by our missionary and church family worldwide.
The home-going service for Bishop G. A. Mangun will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at The Pentecostals of Alexandria, 2817 Rapides Avenue, Alexandria, Louisiana 71301-5649, phone (318) 487-8976 or (318) 473-4443, Fax (318) 445-5406. Visitation will begin at 12 noon and continue until service time.
The graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 23, 2010, with procession departing from The Pentecostals of Alexandria at 9:30 a.m. The Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Pineville, Louisiana.
Thank you so much for keeping the Mangun family in your prayers asking God to bring them strength and comfort during this time of loss.
Sincerely,
Bruce A. Howell
General Director of Foreign Missions

Thanks so much for this post, Timlan.
I guess the first time I heard Bro Mangun was in the late fifties at the campground in Tioga.
I loved to watch him praise the Lord. We're gonna miss that lifted arm, with the hand twirling in the air! lol
