There's more to this story than meets the eye. Without getting too specific, I'll just say that this situation and I are very close neighbors and it has been in our local papers on a daily basis.
There are two factors that were involved, here. One, the principal reacted to what was probably bad information. He wasn't taking an act against the flag, so much as trying to protect the boy. His understanding was, the boy was in potential danger and he felt the obligation to protect him.
Secondly, this really was the fallout from May 5 of this year when many people were flying the the flag of Mexico for the Cinco De Mayo celebration, which is a very big deal here in California. In
that case there was some reaction from locals (and it happens every year) who were taunting those flying the Mexican flag. There was a ruling
then that no one could fly the Mexican flag, which was understandably very hurtful to the local Mexican culture.
The school district made a big mistake on Cinco De Mayo. So when this young fellow decided to fly his flag now, many people responded by saying, "Wait a minute...you wouldn't let us fly our flag, why are you allowing him to fly his?"
A campus supervisor feared problems, reported it to those in charge, and the district followed up a bad ruling with another bad ruling.
This is NOT a case of an American establishment being anti-American. It's a case of a local school board making
two bad decisions.
