Claiming Denomination

Why do we claim to be of a denomination instead of a disciple of Jesus Christ? How are we known? What causes the separation of Christians?

Re: Claiming Denomination

Unless quizzed further, I simply identify myself as Christian when I'm asked.

Re: Claiming Denomination

DENOMINATION

I hate that word.

It comes from the word "Denominate," or to give a name.

In math it is the multiples of a number...that is to cause one number to denominate causing one number to be divisible by another.

It's ugly regardless of what definition you want to apply to it.

I'm not going to be named by any other than whose name I was baptized in. Neither am I going to be divided or fractionated. I belong to God and I will not assume the name of another. I belong to the body of Christ which is not divided.

Re: Claiming Denomination

I find it somewhat disconcerting to take a name of a group which splintered from a group which splintered from a group which splintered from a group etc. I find that if I want to carry any designation, I prefer simply Christian. I say that because I have learned that to be like Christ is the highest and most humbling call in life. In also saying such, I find that I am not linked to any one denomination or organization, but all in Christ are my brother.

Re: Claiming Denomination

I remember when I was 14 and first introduced to the Apostolic Church. I had no idea how to pronounce it, so I sounded it out. Sounded like a po(short o)st ol ic to me with the emphasis on the post. Somehow that just sounded BAD! Like it was evil - against God somehow. LOL

Re: Claiming Denomination

I just tell people we try to follow Jesus and His Word. It's really vague, but sometimes it's easier to start at the basics and move on from there.
