**WARNING***
This thread is, admittedly, speaking in terms of broad generalities. Not all people from any group are the same. There are nice & mean people in every single group you could define (except the groups of nice & mean people I guess) :) But.. please do not try to tie me into a "not all ******** people are mean etc" banter. I am aware of that and this thread is, I repeat, speaking in broad generalities.
I was reading Deacon Blues recent thread "Liberals Always Need Someone To Hate" and a thought suddenly occurred to me. Deacon was asking why Liberals are so mean or some similar expression of that question. I immediately thought "he must be talking about politically liberal individuals because that isn't the case with religiously liberal individuals (generally speaking of course) "
And then I thought... in the religious realm if one side or the other is known for their vitriol & venom it is the conservative side. I found that odd that in politics & religion two difference sides are known for the same thing.
So... I wondered why.
My thoughts on that question, so far, are these...
People from both politically liberal and religiously conservative groups who are known for their "meanness" have something in common. (Please note that I did not label ALL politically liberal or religiously conservative people as mean. I said PEOPLE from both groups who ARE known for their meanness)
Your average "mean" political liberal is that way because they have a way of thinking and they want you to live that way and it angers them that you don't jump on board with all the high taxes and over the top regulations etc.
Your average "mean" religious conservative is that way for similar reasoning.
Both groups are angry because they have a thought process and they feel you should follow that line of thinking and it makes them attack because you don't line your daily life up to their way of thinking.
One group tells you that you are going to destroy the earth if you don't do what they think you should do.
The other group tells you that you are going to be destroyed in hell if you don't do what they think you should do.
But the common value is that they have a way of living in their minds and they feel you should follow that way of living and it angers them when you do not follow suit.
Your thoughts?

I would argue that political conservatives are generally far more mean and outrageous than political liberals... or at least to the same degree as political liberals. So to me I see meanness as more of a conservative problem.

And I would argue that most of either side that I have met in person are not mean at all. But some are. I rarely discuss religion or politics outside AFF.

I think the meanness only affects the realm from which it stems and doesn't change the individual in any other area.

I have always thought the terms were switched when it came to politics and religion.
Political liberals want more laws, rules and regulations to make everyone do things the way they want them done.
It has often struck me that the same people who are rabidly conservative when it comes to politics..... want limited government, less laws, LIBERTY... are often the same people who think we need tons of laws to be able to serve God. (and are called conservatives)
The government wants to force us to wear seatbelts, tell us when and where we can talk on our cell phones, how tall our garage can be.... and conservatives hate that. They say that we don't need laws for every single little thing. The government needs to back off.
And yet the same people often think we need laws for every single little thing in the church. Video technology is invented - we need a law for that. Internet - need a law for that. Facebook - need a law for that. French manicures - need a law for that.
We get so annoyed at the government for thinking that they have to make a new law for every issue that comes up. And then do the same thing in the church.
It has always struck me as very ironic.

I see vitriol coming mainly from controllers and destroyers.
in the religious context it seems true that controllers generally come from the conservative side. by their very nature religious liberals just have no desire to control other peoples relationship with God.
However, I see plenty of destroyers on the liberal side of the religious aisle. and they are just as hateful and venomous as any ultracon that ever came down the pike.
Politically, liberals are the controllers... that doesn’t mean there aren’t conservatives that are controllers too. just not as many. and strangely liberals are also generally the destroyers. they do not like what the nation is so they seek to destroy it and rebuild in their own image.

I see it more as conservatives want to legislate morality... in both government and the local church.

Right... as I said... I am speaking in general terms.
In general terms political liberals are the ones who want everyone to line their lives up to their mindsets and religious conservatives appear to feel the same need.
There are, indeed, controllers on both sides but, generally speaking, we agree that this is the tendency
