New word today....
I learned a new word today. That not unusual for a guy that quit school in the 7th grade. I like learning new words. And i like using them in a sentence.
The word today is "heterodox' [het-er-uh-doks]
"He had recieved the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but his informal links with the organized pentecostal movement were through the "Jesus Only" movement, the most heterodox and sectarian wing of pentecostalism." -David Edwin harrell Jr, "Oral Roberts, An American Life" Indiana University Press, 1985)
Here, in writing about the late William Branham, Harrell refers to the "Jesus Only" movement as "heterodox" and "sectarian". Well, that sent me to Dictionary. com because I didn't know what "heterodox' was. Wasn't real sure about "sectarain" either. So, I found that "heterodox", an adjective, means:
1. not in accordance with established or accepted doctrines or opinions, especially in theology; unorthodox.
2. holding unorthodox doctrines or opinions.
Then I looked up "sectarian":
1. of or pertaining to sectaries or sects.
2. narrowly confined or devoted to a particular sect.
3. narrowly confined or limited in interest, purpose, scope, etc.
–noun
4. a member of a sect.
5. a bigoted or narrow-minded adherent of a sect.
Wow. The first one, "heterodox' I can accept. We do, I suppose, believe things not in accordance with established or accepted doctrines. But to do so makes us "sectarian" as well? A sect? Narrowly confined? Limited in interest? Bigoted and narrow minded?
I have heard it said that the truest and clearest picture one can see of himself, is not how he sees himslf, but, rather, how others see him. What do you think? Is the "Jesus only movement" heterodox? Are we sectarian?
