Re: Near death experiences?
My brother, who avowed himself to be atheist, claimed he died and saw nothingness.
However, after I questioned him more about it, he said he woke up and had a tube in his throat. He had epiglottitis, which is an inflammation of the epiglottis — the flap at the base of the tongue that keeps food from going into the trachea (windpipe). It swelled so large that it was unable to open to allow air into his windpipe when he inhaled. He ran out into the cold North Dakota air and that reduced the swelling enough to save his life.
Most likely what happened to him was that the medical team had to put an endotracheal tube in his windpipe to allow air passage. Most people fight very hard when they cannot breathe...or when someone is shoving a tube down your throat...so they had to sedate him in order to get it in. Of course there was nothingness for him. But he thought he died and the medical team brought him back.
