Interesting question someone asked me about Jesus

The question was:
"Was Jesus literate?"

I said yes of course, he read scriptures in the temple at the beginning of His ministry.
He wrote on the ground when they brought the Adulteress woman to him for judgment.

If there are other examples I can't think of them.

But the question got me to thinking
(Obviously on purpose)

Why don't we have any writings directly from the hand of Jesus?

He did not write maybe because he was busy just doing and orally teaching. John said if it were to be written all he did the world could not contain the books.

It seems to me like Matthew probably was his scribe. There may have been others also.

Re: Interesting question someone asked me about Je

John 7
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”
16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority

So he probably did not have a formal education like the pharisees.

But thinking out loud here, what would Jesus write about, when he is the very word of God himself. Everything is about him. Anything he would write would be about himself..lol.

So instead of writing, he just told those pharisees
"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me"

Another thought is why write about himself when he can just converse with us?

Re: Interesting question someone asked me about Je

There was nothing like paper then. It was either vellum, prepared from the skins of sheep and cattle or papyrus, prepared from reeds. Torah scrolls would have been written on vellum but it was all very expensive and time consuming.

Jesus likely learned how to read and write on a wax tablet written on with a pointy stylus and smoothed out when a new page was needed. We know these were in use from burial portraits in Egypt. The one document he would have read would have been the synagogue Torah scroll. Matthew might have used papyrus to keep his rax records. Outside of that, probably not.
