Dreams are important, albeit most do not recognize them as such; and the Scriptures contains much to tell us about them, for it is by the means of dreams that God 'speaks' to mankind. Consider the following examples:
God gave a dream to Abimelech to prohibit him from having a sexual encounter with Sarah the wife of Abraham (
Genesis 20:2-7).
God spake to Jacob in a dream (
Genesis 31:10-12).
God warned Laban against speaking against Jacob by way of a dream (
Genesis 31:24).
God gave Joseph dreams (
Genesis 37:5-10).
The Butler & Baker of the king of Egypt were given dreams while serving in Pharoh's prison & God enabled Joseph to interpret (
Genesis 40:5-16).
God also gave dreams to Pharoh, Daniel, Nebuchanezzar(sp?) and others, relaying specific messages to them by such means. And He continues to do so to men today, as evidenced by the following scriptural passages:
"When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaints; then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:..." (
Job 7:13-14)
"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man." (
Job 33:14-17)
These same passages excerpted from the New Living Translation - "For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride."
On the day of Pentecost, at the birth of the New Testament Church, Peter told the Jews who came to hear him deliver that first sermon (quoting from the prophecy of
Joel 2:28):
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:..." (
Acts 2:17)
The New Living Translation records Peter's words after this manner: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
Admittedly, the enemy, always endeavoring to duplicate everything God does, also causes us to experience the 'visions' of dreams. By reliance upon the indwelling Spirit we can easily distinguish the source of our dreams, enabling us to identify and discard those from the enemy as crafty efforts to entice us to sin or return to our former wicked ways.
I am inclined to believe that perhaps Sister RGCRAIG's dream was from God, enabling her to recognize the merits of
Psalm 18:2...
I rely greatly upon dreams, for after seeking God for specific answers (and not expecting that I will hear a mighty voice from out of the heavens in response), I always try to be attentive to whatever dreams I receive afterwards, for more often than not, He answers my petitions through such means.
