He/she is being tormented because they actually realize they are in torment and in an eternity without God. A soul cannot exist without a consciousness.

Right, so my next question is does it have to have a body to be tormented? A soul has no sensation a body, right?

The soul has realization. You think the torment is the fire and brimstone and darkness? No, the true torment is the realization through consciousness that they are now in an eternity without Almighty God...and the hope of ever touching him again.

Jesus told about a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. Both men died. Lazarus was carried by the angels to a place called Abraham's bosom which was also known as Paradise. The rich man's body was buried but part of him (soul, spirit?) went to a place called "hell" in the KJV and called "hades" or "sheol" in other versions. Although the rich man's body was buried somewhere, the part of him that was in hell/hades/sheol experienced thirst, memory, torment from flames, regret, and fear for his brothers who were still alive. reference Luke 16:19-31
I realize there are differences of opinion among Christians as to how much of this is a parable and how much is symbolic imagery. Check out http://home.att.net/~jrd/Where_Are_the_Dead.gif
for a chart that shows how the late Bro. S.G. Norris (founder of the Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, MN) taught this. Bro.Frank Curts, who was my (UPC) pastor for several years taught "soul sleep." He believed that from death to the first or second resurrection, the soul and body were asleep and experienced no sensation. He taught that the story of Lazarus and the rich man was a parable about the position of Jews (rich man) and Gentiles (Lazarus).

Re: What part of man goes to hell?
Does it really matter which part? I don't want any part of me to go to hell.

Re: What part of man goes to hell?
The whole man is composed of body, soul and spirit. The body is the physical created portion of man which returns to the dust. The spirit is the part of man which is the decision making part of man. The soul is the real you and the seat of consciousness in man. What we do in our lifetime will determine the eternal fate of our soul. If we are led by our spirit alive and conscious to Gods Spirit we will reap eternal life. If we are led by the flesh we will reap damnation and eternal separation from God.
The spirit returns to God upon physical death and the soul either goes to the place of torment or to be in the presence of God. The soul in not complete without the body that is why in the resurrection we will receive a glorified body. The unjust will be resurrected at the last judgment to be cast into the lake of fire.
So much more and with time I will try to bring scriptures to shed light on this topic. So much to say so little time.
God Bless
Pastor Daniel T Salaz
