TNIV, Gender Inclusive Translation

here are 2 examples

2 Timothy 2:2 in kjv
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:2 in tniv

2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 in kjv

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 in tniv

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that all God's people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

thoughts? that last verse excludes perfection mtd

Re: TNIV, Gender Inclusive Translation

I'm not a fan of the NIV but I don't really have a problem with the way it translates those verses.

Often when I quote John 3:3 I will say "...unless a person is born again...." and James 5:16 as "...the effective fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much..."

I don't consider quoting the verses the way I do to be tampering with scripture or to be misquoting scripture or to be adding to or taking from God's Word.

Re: TNIV, Gender Inclusive Translation

The Greek word there is Anthropos...where we get our word Anthropology...study of mankind (or humans)

3 tn Grk "faithful men"; but here ἀνθρώποις (anthrōpois) is generic, referring to both men and women. Net bible commentary

  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.

no modern translations translate john 3:13 like the kjv

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

in tniv:

13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man.

1 Timothy 3:16

King James Version (KJV)

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1 Timothy 3:16 in tniv

16 Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

except for these brief negatives, i really like the tniv, i read in gordon fee's book that the tniv is better than the nkjv and the nrsv. i just bought two study bibles for my sisters a kjv and a tniv for each sister.

Re: TNIV, Gender Inclusive Translation

I bet you guys aren't bothered by the NIV's treatment of Luke 17:34.

KJV:
I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

NIV:
I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.

Oh. The NIV is also gender-neutral in at least some of the verses cited. Didn't check all of them.

Seriously?

If the Bible wasn't God's Word the King James would still have more literary value than all of Shakespeare.

Unbelievable.

Re: TNIV, Gender Inclusive Translation

Does the new NIV have the following version of what we have known for years as “The Lord’s Prayer,” or “The Our Father,” or “The Pater Noster” as used by those groups known as “Emergent,” or “Seeker Friendly” or “New Age.”

Our Divine Parent who lives in us and all around us,
We know you by many names.
May we fill the world with your divine influence.
Provide us with everything we need.
And help us to not judge anyone who may not see you as we do.
Help each of us to live according to the way you have wired us.
For your glorious kingdom is within all of us.
Amen
