Cool Re: Medical Study Proves Speaking In Tongues.

You know, I believe that it is from God. Now, that doesn't mean it can't be counterfeited or fleshly. I just recently went through a period of studying on this deeply and praying about because I've been confused and not wanting to be in err. I even went to "not wanting" to speak in tongues unless it was absolutely from God. I found that in prayer when the tongues came they were definetly not me just babbling out of habit or anything like that..it was the Spirit. Even "withholding" them from myself, just to be sure.. I know that may sound weird. I was not quenching the Spirit though, I just didn't push it or seek after it I just prayed as normal, sometimes without even speaking, waited and if the tongues came out they came out, yet Ive found that we can still pray "in the Spirit" plenty without speaking in tongues, they are just bestowed on us for edification and intercession. God has answered many of my questions when men have failed me. I know none of us want to be in error, my advice to anyone is to humble yourself and take it directly to God in prayer, not just to man.

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Romans 8:26

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" Ephesians 6:18

Stephen, on your point, I would have liked the scientist to scan someone who was just "blabbering" without thinking... Just talk, don't think. I would like to see what those scans showed.
Same here. That would be interesting.

I'm not going to give my personal opinion, just some scriptures to ponder

I Corinthians 2:11

"For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God."

Romans 8:26, 27

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."

Acts 2:4

"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (emphasis added)

I Corinthians 14:2

"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."

I Corinthians 14:5

"I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."

I Corinthians 14:4

"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church."

Jude 20

"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost ..."

Isaiah 28:11, 12

"For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing..."

James 3:3-8

"Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire ..."

Matthew 3:11

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:"

I Corinthians 14:5

"I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied..."

"Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues."

I Thessalonians 5:19

"Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven."
Luke 10:20

Hope this helps a little!

Thank you for putting all of those together. But no, it didn't really help. I've read what the Bible says, but there are still too many unanswered questions.

maybe a little off topic but...
Nahkoe, where do you go when you are seeking answers to questions?

I mostly study for myself.

I have a few friends I talk to about what I find when I'm studying, or when I need ideas of which direction to go.

So in trying to understand your statement:
"I've read what the Bible says, but there are still too many unanswered questions."
are these unanswered LIFE questions or unanswered spiritual/Kingdom guestions?

Generally speaking, if you study other men/women's opinions they will always propose to "answer some question"...but when it comes to the issues of the individual's heart, they are all just randomly shooting into the shadowy, secret places. We have all seen science, the medical community, the psyhcatric druggies, and the PMA preachers and the infinite number of diet plans....all promise answers to problems but its the rare exception that ever delivers symptom relief...let alone cure or deliverance.

So what resources have you found to be profitable and worthy of your study?

My entire background for rational sequential thinking was formed by the scientific method:
Stating a purpose
Forming a hypothesis
Collecting Data
Organizing the results
Stating a conclusion (with respect to the hypothesis)

That is the exact same way I have approached the reality (or not) of God, the wisdom and potency (or not) of his logos/reymah, the gifts of his Spirit. This whole dynamic that we experience as individuals really can only be built upon the most basic stuff that scripture lays out for us:
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.[Heb 11:6]
In my understanding, FAITH is initially similar to a HYPOTHESIS, it is something believed (from hearing) that is not yet realized in the temporal/created realm. I am very saddened by so many of my brethren that view FAITH apart from HEARING; as some kind of mental assent or vivid imagination or an enthusiastically repeated mantra of 'asking'.

If an individual runs that experiment a couple of times with an honest heart (not tempting God by demanding some stage performance), God's arrival will be both exciting and somewhat fearful. His reality is both GREAT news and troubling...we just have to be mindful how godly sorrow works repentance, and the more repented our lifestyle choices are, the further we move away from the scary aspects of a righteous God.

I was referring specifically to speaking in tongues.

I study a multitude of things. But mostly I try to sort out the Bible. I'm learning Hebrew, very slowly, and intend to learn Greek.

Seems like a decent method, for the most part.

This puzzles me. Without faith, well what is faith? Blind faith? Believing something that you have cause to believe? Believing something that's impossible? What?

Rewarder of them that diligently seek him? What kind of reward? And why do I want it?

That thought truly terrifies me.

Repentance? What does that really mean anyhow? And how is that going to take us further from a the scary aspects of a righteous God?

I know what repentance is, but I have never really been able to work out how that applies to real life. Are you referring to telling God "I'm sorry", or the gut wrenching sobs or the act of changing behavior? Or something else?
