Second bolded statement -- I disagree. We are saved by grace through faith. Your second bolded statement has turned that "precious, glorious, wonderful" name into a magic formula. The words aren't saving you. Jesus is. The entire point of someone being baptized, in a Christian setting, is because of Christ. It's a given that they are being baptized as a disciple of Jesus.

I practice and preach baptism into the name of Jesus. Our candidates profess their faith publicly, in a testimonial-type way. But I don't, not even for a minute, think that saves us.

If you don't believe it's necessary, why do you teach it? That seems completely hypocritical! First you saved people are saved by being baptized in the titles, then you say you teach baptism in the name of Jesus. That makes no sense. Either it matters or it doesn't.

And you DID, by implication, make the name of Jesus sound like a magic formula, by implying that we think it's merely just something that makes the water work. Not at all sir! It's much more than that! It is the only name under heaven given among men whereby we can be saved!

You're trying to narrow down salvation to one action when it is obedience to the commands of The Word that bring us salvation.

Being baptized is necessary. Necessary to save me? Nah. Never had anyone not want to be baptized, or not obey the command for baptism either.

No one is saved by being baptized in titles. Quit making things up. Where is that being said?

I was quite explicit what I thought a magic formula was -- and the way you described it, makes the name of Jesus a magic formula. I'm the one upset!

No, calling on the name of Jesus is not a magic formula but it is the only name that can be said at baptism which will result in the remission of our sins and thereby prepare us for eternity! Without the name of Jesus called upon at baptism, there is no heaven and only eternal suffering!

Brother, please take back your disrespectful statement! I fear for you!

So, OldPathsII is saying, here, that if a person doesn't have particular words said over them at baptism, they're going to hell. So can I respond??? Admin, anyone out there? CanI respond to this? These are very strong words.

what if the "formula" or "incantation" is a mixture of titles and the name?

what if titles like Father, or Lord, or Son, or Savior are used along with the name?

Is that OK?
or should it be done over again in the (singular) name?

Then there is the theory held by some that it MUST be done in a river where water is flowing by.

Not new...just enforced.

We like the Fellowship Hall to be a place for fellowship and fun. You've turned a wonderful testimony thread into a debate.
