Interestingly enough... genetic studies have shown that the human population has gone through some pretty severe "bottlenecks" resulting in a huge decrease in our genetic diversity.
It seems that at one point the entire human race consisted of a single breeding pair. At another point the entire human race consisted of a small family group of perhaps 4 breeding pairs, no doubt with one of those pairs being the aged parents of the others.

Of course you are Aquila! My wife will be very upset with you!

Those to whom the New Testament was written to... did any of those have more than one wife?

So we have the Lord portraying Himself as having two wives. Aholah / Samaria and Aholibah / Jerusalem. Jer.3:6-14, 31:31-34. And possibly Jesus, in the parable of ten virgins, presenting Himself the bridegroom of five virgins. Mat.25:1-13. Would God express himself in sinful terms?

I'd say yes, or Paul wouldn't have had to specify that a bishop be the husband of one wife. Paul, in my opinion, clearly exaulted monogamy over polygamy with this standard for leadership.
In an earlier post I had asked the question...was polygamy undesirable because the institution was sinful or was it because mankind is sinful? It appears that God's Law would allow for multiple wives, war brides, and concubines. One would think that if man lived according to the Law of God they would be happy. It may be that polygamy was a desired model under the Law seeing that it ensured legal responsibility upon men seeking additional companions, provided social stability, protected women from poverty and exploitation, multiplied children, and built resources. But the women involved were often spiteful, competitive, and jealous toward one another.
So in short... polygamy was unworkable because of one thing... women. LOL
