I've always thought that too - some kind of civil servant that was disliked...like a tax man - but I'm not sure. I didnt remember him being rich tho - and never realized he was a thief.....
seems like all we ever remember is he was short
I think I'll find one of those sites D4T recommended for bible study helps and see if I can find out something more specific

Y'all were right...I found the answer

one who farmed the taxes ( Luk 19:2) to be levied from a town or district, and thus undertook to pay to the supreme government a certain amount. In order to collect the taxes, the publicans employed subordinates ( 5:27; 15:1; 18:10), who, for their own ends, were often guilty of extortion and peculation. In New Testament times these taxes were paid to the Romans, and hence were regarded by the Jews as a very heavy burden, and hence also the collectors of taxes, who were frequently Jews, were hated, and were usually spoken of in very opprobrious terms. Jesus was accused of being a "friend of publicans and sinners" ( Luk 7:34).

Possibly did it in solfeggio. I can still remember sitting around the dorm singing hymns in harmony in solfeggio! What good that ever did me, I'll never know!

Too bad for you -- you didn't get to wear the 1975 black and white swirly double knit dress!! Or the 1976 bicentennial dress - navy double knit with red & white top stitching with a little US flag scarf. Those were the days of high fashion, yes siree!!

I was...7, 8 when y'all were at JCM - I was around then, the Farm I mean, but I was a smidge older than toddler.
not much tho
ROFL
oh - speaking of the farm..
there were these girls that had their room decorated on the outside with poster board and stuff that made their room look like a candy store. I'm not sure if we were there b/c of an open house, or there to pick up Brenda...but I've never forgotten that.....
