Many stores open early and stay open late. The Valley Stream Wal-Mart usually opens at 9 a.m.
Items on sale at the Wal-Mart store included a $798 Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV, a Bissel Compact Upright Vaccum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as "The Incredible Hulk" for $9."
Wow. It's crazy to think that a man could be trampled to death over a big screen TV or a cheap digital camera.
These people ought to be ashamed of themselves.

TRFrance, I have to agree with you.
It is such a tragedy but in North American society, materialism is sung from the highest rooftop that "Gain is Godliness!"
We joke about being hip checked by a Chinese grandmother over a sale on toilet paper in Canada!
Alas, it isn't far from the truth!

My parents fought us kicking and screaming when we stop celebrating christmas. It took years before they finally calmed down over it.
My mom now says that seeing the madness every year.... you couldn't drag her kicking and back to being involved in all of that chaos.

It has nothing to do with celebrating or not celebrating Christmas. It is about going, or not going, to Walmart or anywhere else at 5-6 AM the day after Thanksgiving.
I went out and did some shopping at <gasp> 9:30 am this morning. All the door buster stuff is long gone, but managed to get a couple of real good deals anyways. The stores are all much more 'sane' by mid morning.
(Bought a 9 foot artificial tree for a little more than the cost of two of the real things at Home Depot! -and this will last 20 or more years.)

Re: Wal Mart Employee Trampled To Death
What a sad story.... the things that people will do because of GREED.
Walmart offered some of the same Black Friday deals online.... no fighting the crowds. I got the Crayola Glow station my son had on his wish list, and the Sandisk SD card my daughter had on her wish list so that she would be able to store more songs for her MP3 player. No extra items to look at to tempt me to spend more than I wanted to spend. I bought two items and hit the checkout button. Items will be delivered to my door in less than 10 days.
Amazon.com had a great sale, Picked up a few items at more than 70% off retail... free super saver shipping... items will be delivered straight to my door in 5-9 days.
Christianbook.com had some great deals also. Reasonable shipping cost, delivered to my door... no hassle return policy.
Why would I ever leave home to shop?
The little bit of shopping that I was going to do for Christmas is DONE.... never left the house--- and completed in less than an hour.

Tina, for some reason I believe you would find a deal, sale, or no sale & all from your home too!

Re: Wal Mart Employee Trampled To Death
The worst part... besides the fact that someone died is that people were mad about having to leave Walmart, and then wanted to go back in to continue their shopping, like nothing had happened! That Walmart should have closed for the rest of the day.
Like D4T, I am so glad that I don't celebrate xmas anymore!

Re: Wal Mart Employee Trampled To Death
So sad. I do NOT venture out to shop on Black Friday. Utter madness. Plus, as Tina said, you can get the same great deals online at most stores, if that's what you're concerned about.
Greed is an awful thing.
