My husband and I were living together without benefit of clergy. The pastor took my husband aside and told him we needed to get married or something. So, we did. I don't remember a proposal.

P.S. So nobody thinks that we knew better.....we didn't really know that living together was wrong.

I asked her to marry me on a crisp October evening in the Autumn of 1987. We were on a church hayride in the middle of nowhere. I had brought flowers when I picked her up. We had on flannels and denim and the air was cool and clear.

The whole wagon was in the middle of a big hay throwing fight when I threw my coat over our heads and asked her to marry me.

After we had dated for seven months in a church meeting I pointed to my future wife and screamed "SEE THAT???? I MADE THAT!!!!*

Then I took her to a Japenese Steakhouse in Jackson, MS (Sakura) and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me!

*This part of the story is not true of me but one of my favorite Pentecostal preacher stories courtesy of Carp who saw and heard it first hand.

We were laying on the floor in my apartment on evening just watching tv (seriously - that all!!) when all of the sudden out of nowhere, Walt says to me, "You know, we've been dating for 3 years now. I think it's probably inevitable that we'll end up married. What do you think? You wanna?" I said, "yes" and we finished watching M*A*S*H. then he went home.

The next morning Walt called me and said to me, "Tell me again - did you say Yes when I asked you about getting married?" I repeated my yes and he started to cry (yes, they were tears of happiness!) We decided to go and visit my parents that evening so he could ask their permission (I was 29 and he was 32)

And that's all she wrote, folks!! 21 years later it is still the best decision we've ever made

She was 16 and I was 19. That's about as "all out" as it gets at that age.
