Re: Ego Driven Departures

Do you think there is no ego among those who don't leave?

Good point! Some who don't leave have egos bigger than Texas!

The point is when pride grows, it seems people have a tendency to be above the rules and laws and like Leona Helmsley said, "Only little people pay taxes".
I have heard from several sources that Jim has really become a changed man since his fall from national grace.

Re: Ego Driven Departures

Just thinking back over the years; those who "left" almost always did so because of some sort of local political squabble. I could name the names of many fine ministers who "left" because of the "ego" that ruled over them locally and in the district.

I think RR points out a real problem. But the greater problem, historically, has been...

"The Ego That Would Not Leave!"

Read a statement today that is relavent to this discussion, as part of my study of Agape love. " At the root of all quarrels, is pride, which Paul states has nothing to do with Agape love." The more I think about it I think this is true.

Re: Ego Driven Departures

Ego has caused some men to leave, but has also caused men to hunger for more power within the org. I despise preachers who think they're something on a stick and think they deserve a pedestal.

I can see rrford's description in exiting of both ultra -con and liberal preachers.

That being said, ego is not always the reason a preacher leaves an organization. Many times it is sincere disagreement on issues. There may be personality conflicts where a preacher has to decide to stay and be miserable or leave and take a chance at happiness.

Heard the same thing. A little time in the wilderness.

Prison and public embarrassment can humble a man!

But it is interesting what a little "success" does to some men. It isn't long before the humility gives way to ego and the servant's heart fades in the light of wanting to be admired and served.

When men cross that line they enter into a different arena altogether. It is the Arena of Ego Driven Ministry. They are now "ministering" more for the sake of being heard than being effective. Their concern is more about self-proclaimed ministries than the ministry of Jesus Christ.

One of the greatest dangers of this kind of ministry is a shrinking circle of influence and adulation. Once one has exhausted the conference and campmeeting circuit and that become routine, then the ego demands a larger venue. It is then that Ego Driven Departures occur. Fellowship with organizations and ministers are severed because of a "desire" to reach the world. A bigger stage is demanded and you have "arrived." After all, the go that is awakened demands to cintinually be fed. The words "I die daily" are soon forgotten in the world of "I" "Me" and "Mine."

Oh, most will never admit that their ego is what drives them. To do so would work at cross purposes to true ministry. It is easier to depart and ridicule those who remain. (Except for those few who will pay the Ego Driven Minister enough to continue to preach in their pulpit). The Ego Driven Ministry all of a sudden gets a "name." Usually that of the Ego Driven minister. Somehow Jesus gets left out of a lot of those ministry names. Go figure...

While not all who leave do so because of Ego Driven ministry, there are indeed those who do. The old adage is "Time Tells All." Indeed it does. Maybe not today; or tomorrow; or even a year from now. But in the course of time all Ego Driven Ministries will come to an end of themselves.

May God help all of those called to the High Calling of the Ministry of Jesus Christ ever keep their ego on the altar and let all glory truly go to Him that deserves it.
At least most of the qualifications to begin the journey into ego driven ministry will never be afforded to you.

I heard something along these lines from a man who was never asked to preach a major conference, he was bitter and railed against the ones who were asked. Im glad you are not like that man.
