I agree--which is why it isn't worth getting too upset about, IMO.

Re: This message scares me??

I also found out about Ron Phillips and get a lot out of listening to him...
I wish there was more christian living type messages you know? (in upci) and I know we have to be in a church... we just really need God's direction... and we are hurting and confused with all of this... I have been feeling bad many yrs going to the churches I have gone to over the last 10 or so yrs... its the style.. maybe I am just too sensitive and hard on myself... I just hate the underlying tone that I am never good enough... How do we free ourselves from feeling that way?

I seriously doubt if Pastor Carpenter doesn't want the people under his care to not "enjoy life", and I seriously doubt if his goal is for them to feel discouraged or condemned.

Just because someone says something that sounds bad or even upsetting doesn't mean they MEANT it that way. If you enjoy his messages on a regular basis, then I think it's fair to assume that a small aberration is not indicative of his overall mindset.

e.g., we need to cut preachers some slack. I realize there are those who abuse their authority, but I don't think that's the majority, and even those who might say something that comes across badly--it doesn't mean that was their INTENT.

Personally, I suggest emailing Pastor Carpenter, and discussing it with him.
I understand what u are saying, but what if I was a new convert and I heard this I would not come back. But yet someone like Charles Stanley it comes across alot better. U know what I mean.

Absolutely. Take it seriously. But don't take people as seriously as you take the Bible. People are fallible. They don't always say things just right. Things come out wrong. Cut them some slack. That's all I'm saying.

I still think that contacting Bro. Carpenter directly is the best thing for you to do.

Can I encourage you to talk to God about it?

This may not just be spiritual heartburn, but it may be God moving you (or not).

I know for my wife and I, prayer was a huge factor. Finding peace with what God wanted for our lives.

Not everyone is Charles Stanley. Some people are a little rougher around the edges. And I'm not saying Pastor C. is "rough around the edges"--just generally speaking we need to have the same tolerance for other Christians, including ministers, that we want them to have for us.

God has a knack for working through people even when their personalities (and character) aren't perfect.

Max, this sounds so simple, but it IS the best thing you can do. When you have peace with God, and you KNOW you are in good standing with him, things other people say or think just kind of rolls off.

Feeling overly condemned by things a preacher says can also be a result of putting ministers on a pedestal and putting a little too much stock in everything they say. Preachers are just people, too.

OK so next time I watch TV or Drive my corvette, I should'nt worry about reading the bible more or praying more then right? Cause God understands right? Or have any kind of down time.

I really don't understand this post. lol

Are you trying to get me to say that I think you should read the Bible or pray INSTEAD of driving your corvette or watching TV?

I think we should all spend time in the Word and in communication with God. It's part of our relationship with Him.

Do I think that means we can't have recreational time? Of course not--and I'd be willing to wager that Pastor Carpenter doesn't think that either.
